Gearbox swap from BIS to FSM
« on: March 30, 2006, 09:40:08 AM »
Hi All,

I have been trying to read on the past threads about gearbox problems and how to sort them.

Bottomline for me is to go for another gearbox.
First of all, I do not know much about mechanics etc, this is why i am asking.

I am about ot buy an FSM but it has problems with the 1st gear as i am told. don't really know abouthte gearbox condition unless i go there to drive it. So, i am taking it as the gearbox is shot and i must find a new one to replace it.

Im going to have a look at some 126 cars at a scrab yard. The yard owner does not know anything about the 126s and he cannot tell me if they are BIS or FSM, he needs me to go check them.

I have read that the BIS gearbox will not fit the FSM model car.
In other threads i have read something about changing the bellhouse (From FSM to BIS) to fit.

So my question is this ?

IF I buy a BIS gearbox, and take it to the mechanic, and tell him to swap the bellhouse from the old FSM gearbox on the 'new' BIS  will it then fit the FSM car without any other changes or problems ???

Please help me,

George

Your in luck mate I've just done one but the other way round fsm to bis.You need to swap bell housing's and differential over (don't panic it's simple enough this is because both car's have a different finial drive ratio, one tooth more in the bis).Bar that it's a straight swap.If you want send me a pm and I'll send you my number and I'll run through it with you.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I dont actually own a car yet....i will be getting one if the estimated price to get the one for sale actually is witin my budfet at the moment, as the 126 FSM im interested in buying has the gearbox problems.

So it would b a mechanics job, and at a later day i could have a play around with the 'spare broken' gearbox.

Deep in my heart i'd rather save the 350-400 pounds that the car will cost to buy myself a Dual DCNF Carb setup for my X1/9 which is on its way ..... (i can imagine hearing them huffing puffing and farting  :D .....I hope my wife doesn;t read this.... .).

Thanks again,

Now i know that i can even get hold of a BIS gearbox and that shoudl do me fine.

Cheers for your help,

George
