Sorry paul, the bellhousing is completely different on the bis due to the flat engine layout, however the gearbox itself is virtually identical and will fit its just the mounting bushes on the side of the bis gearbox don't exist on the 126.

No Chris not mine mate,I think i've become Doctor Dolittle (he talk's to baby FIAT's)   Thank's for that Darkhorse so if I swap the bell housing's over it should do the trick? Can the bell housing split or is it part of the casing?(Hope it's the former and not the latter).

Pual you'll be happy to know tha casing does come off so yes you should be able to just swap the boxes and for a guy of your calibre I can't imagine that you'll have any problems

a few things to take into account...

crown and pinion different on aircooler giving higher torque, but lower speed. Your BIS will climb cliffs but you'll be changing up sooner and will have a lower top speed. You can swap crown and pinion, though I've never tried it so can't say how much hassle it is.  if you are going to do that, it would probably be as well to just repair the BIS box?

the aircooler box may not have a reverse light if this matters to you.

the gearbox is fairly easy to rebuild, i quite easily managed to make a good gearbox for my deville by combining the best bits from 2 boxes; take both boxes apart, put all the bits in a box sort them into pairs and then select the best bits from each pair, then just put them back together, the picture in the haynes manual is a good guide.

Got her done lad's thank's for they invaluable advice good job.Used the finial drive from the air cooled in the end(would have had to change the pinion as well and time was a comodity I did'nt have too much have).Started it at six and had it back off the ramp just after eight.Run's the best.again chap's thank's for the input.
