Indicators erratic.
« on: June 28, 2012, 09:48:22 PM »
The indicators on my 126 operate very slowly at low revs, and operate well at higher revs?
New alternator has been fitted recently, though my car is a 73 it has a 652 unit fitted so the dynamo is history.
Also the charge light stays on from starting until the car is revved quite high once warmed, then the light remains off until idling is resumed.
Any idea's please.

Assuming the alternator is good and correct for the car. Could be an earth problem. Or you might have to change a pulley, either for a smaller one on the alternator, or a larger one on the crank.

I have no idea of the idle speed as i have no means of testing.
The light stays on from driving off until i hit what i would say is about 3k, once off it stays off until idle.
Where would i find a different size pulley?
As for correct alternator i have no idea, it was fitted by a garage.
Thanks.

I think that the alternator is pretty much unique to the 126 as it incorporates the foot that mounts onto the crankcase so it would be impossible to fit the wrong one. Pulley size changes ! forget that one,  sorry Marc  ;D unless you are running a tuned engine that will run well over 6,000 rpm. I would first of all check fan belt condition & tension. Then the main earth and power feed connections not forgetting the one at the starter motor. If that fails then you could try replacing the rectifier pack that fits on the alternator. If that fails then you have got to look at the alternator. New brushes are cheap and easy to get at. My indicator speed varies with engine revs but the warning light goes out with the engine at normal tickover speed.

Thanks for that.
Will query with the garage that done work on my car, as this did not happen before.
