Hi there (looking at buying a 126)
« on: February 24, 2012, 11:34:24 AM »
Hi

I am  looking to buy an air cooled 126 and would appreciate any advise as to what to look out for.  ;D

Any idea how much is road tax for 6mths 12mths.

Can anyone recommend an insurance company, any idea on price as it would be 25 years old and come under classic I would imagine.

10 million dollar question…There is one I have an eye on which the owner has stated is well maintained and reliable. I will have to drive it 70 miles home, so have concern on breaking down, would it be best to avoid motorway driving or get it transported on a trailer/lowloader?

Thanks in advance chap’s.

Hi there, good luck with finding a Fiat, there's a lot of good ones on offer at the moment (dependent on your budget) so hopefully you will find one soon!

I'm not an expert but I think road tax is £130 for 12 months.

Insurance is worth shopping around for, got a good price recently with a company called Chaucer but there is probably better on offer.

For the drive back I personally would avoid the motorway (it's a lonely place to breakdown) and if it's not too expensive I would have the car delivered.  Even if it's good it may have been standing a while which can often be the cause of niggles.

Hope that helps.

I think it is possible to get a 126 in a large van, not certain, but might make it easier.

Is it legal to transport one in a van do you know?

Can`t see why it wouldn`t be legal as long as it`s properly strapped down. We`ve done this loads of times and if it`s inside the van they can`t see it anyway.
If you decide to get it recovered and you haven`t got a van let me know and I can send you contact details for a guy who collected few cars for me. He is very reasonable and most of the time it works out cheaper than if we done it ourselves!
I find P.D.James is best for insurance. We`ve just got a car insured for £128, fully comp, unlimited mileage+a named driver... it`s like a 126 but not a 126... ;D
Are you going for an air cooled or a bis???

Just been on Hendy hires site, they have medium (transit iveco LWB), large (transit jumbo), best go and measure up one of their vans and find out the dimensions of a 126 prior and sort out a couple of scafolding planks to drive it up in, although I'm thinking a car transporter if thats cheap enough so if you could PM me his contact details. Many thanks

The dimensions are on here, a BIS is a few inches longer.

Iveco dimensions, looks like you could pick up a few mopeds at the same time.

Use Shipley.com

Very cheap way to transport, less hassle too.

I use the same guy since he`s done the first delivery for us via Shipley.

The thing I didn`t like about Shipley they charged about £30 on top of the quote + the person who delivers the car has to pay some sort of fee to them too.

 :welcome

He there! I insured my 126p for £126 (coincidence?!?) and im 29. That was with sureterm (my mini is with them for £92).

I know its personal preference but stick to A/C. I bought a Polish plated model and it was really cheap, easy to register etc. I  know some people are put off by the foreign plate when buying but as long as the log book is there, you get a receipt for the purchase and its in decent condition dont worry about it!

Check for filler in the sills as they can look solid but some of them have been very well disguised, luckily all the parts are cheap if anything does go wrong!!

Hello! I have just gone through the same decisions last week.....I got a little over excited and just got on the train, made the 65 mile trip down, then drove him back on the M1 about an hour later!! I am 25, a girl, and know nothing about cars and fixing them.....it was a leap of faith but he didn't let me down. It was the best fun, thought the lorries might run me over but after a while I plucked up the courage and overtook them, and WE MADE IT!! I arranged breakdown cover with my insurance, with hire car cover too just in case.

My advice, just do it. Its the best feeling!!
