New member with restoration project
« on: October 21, 2011, 08:26:13 PM »
Evening all

New member here :D
Signed up as one of my neighbours has a 126 bis that has been stood for 15years in a garage.
its a G reg (1990) on 23k. I've looked over the car today for about 20mins.
I'm not familiar with fiats as i'm a BMW/VW fan.
All seems ok however battery is dead (understandably), and tires are flat.
Its not moved since about 1991. my neighbour bought it when it was 12months old from 1 lady owner, with the intention of learning to drive but never got around to learning (scared of the road) so its sat in a garage ever since.

What i need to know is:
A) where is the battery?
B) what oil should i use to service it?
C) what are common faults?
D) I cant get the gearbox into 3rd and 4th gear, would this likely free up if warmed up and driven?
E) If i was to get the car up and running (with T&T) what sort of price would it fetch?

thanks for any help
Mike

Battery in the front , forward opening bonnet.

15w/40 oil

Way to common faults to list , you will find them over time haha

will it go into reverse ? the linkage coupling underneath may be twisted or loose whcih will stop it going into 3rd/4th and reverse but if you can get reverse then that theory may be incorrect.

price is up to who you can sell it to and how well it runs also depending on body condition.
Aus's cleanest Niki !

what are common faults?

rust under the front panel, holes in sills
cooling issues due to bad design - remove the thermostat
causing jealousy due to awesomeness

gearchange issue might be due to the gearlinkage rubber being perished or loose-

oh and wlecome!
one resprayed and another arrives- double trouble BIS style!!

Thanks for the replies guys. The gearbox and rear drums are worrying me arm. I'll worry about the engine when I get around to it

I'll get some pics up next time I'm over there (and if I can get in the garage doors).

As for selling ASAP. Yes and no.
Ultimate goal is to sell as she doesn't use the car (and needs to raise funds for house repairs) however she (and me) want to see it restored back to its prime.

It's a shame that a car that's hardly been used it just sat slowly rusting away!

Look forward to the photos. What is the condition of the body? Rust is its biggest enemy.
