Hi all,
I'm new to this forum as a fairly recent purchaser of a '91 BIS on ebay, which I love... but has tested my patience too much... within a few attempts to drive the little nipper around the country I've managed to experience most of the overheating, misfiring and spluttering engine problems that seem to be commonplace for the BIS, culminating in a seemingly inevitable blown head gasket

(and the associated sky-high fixing costs).
So I was faced with a choice: either sort out the gasket and then do up the engine with some cleaning and mods or replace it entirely.
My decision was to do the latter because I would really like to turn her into something reasonably fast and reliable as well as the quirky and charming little thing she is on the exterior (having my cake and eating it too, perhaps, but why not?) My preference for a transplant engine is a BMW R-series motorbike engine for a few reasons, mainly the fact that I ride an R 1150 GS bike and have always been in awe of the thing's reliability and power. I reckon it should also fit neatly inside the BIS's engine compartment without crowding out the back seats.
If any of you experienced ones know of any information relevant to BMW bike engine transplants or of anyone who has done (or is planning to do) something like this I would be really grateful for a lead!
