hi there , just got around to greasing the kingpins on the bis , passenger side went great ..

drivers side ???? grease seems to not go in atall and just squirt all over the place . i did try and clean the nipple?

any ideas? should i replace the nipple?? or what can i do to make sure im getting grease in ? ..

someone said on this forum on a old post " heat it up "   ???? heat what up and where and for how long is my question ??  as dont want to bugger anything else ..

anyway anyhelp would be great ...

incidently one more thing, what size or how to i remove the grease nipple should i need to ?? as i had a 500 once and in the end i needed extreme heat and pair of molegrips ...

thanks

richard

Pack ice round it, to get it really cold. you'll find it sticks out more!  </4

Don't muck about, just replace it it's cheap.
I found some of the rubber caps that go on the brake bleed nipples and put them on to avoid grit and dirt getting in as the grit ends-up in the joint helping it destroy itself.

LOL @ richk, hope your missus doesnt read this forum :P

there's a trick...when a bird needs a lift ...tell her the car is too small to wear a jacket and then switch the heating off
Then find a bumpy road :P...oops bumped the mirror

I'd imagine a local motor place, hardware stores might not have them.

The idea around heating them up is that if they haven't been greased for a while the grease can solidify  within the kingpin and heating it up should soften it.
I've had a few cause me trouble in the past and its always been this problem.
I have never had a problem with the nipple itself (but its worth checking if others have), but to check you could try
to move the ball bearing within the nipple by prodding it with a  pin. if it moves then its fine!

As for heating the kingpin:
from the grease nipple the grease enters the kingpin via a swirl cut in the kingpin shaft from top to bottom. Concentrate the heat at the grease nipple area and all around. Not too far top or bottom so as not to melt the rubbers. Melting the rubbers is the only thing you can do wrong with this method.

Cheers

Old thread but I don't suppose you know what size the grease nipples are? Ended up damaging one today whilst replacing kingpins!

An old thread but I have to buy a grease gun to do mine, do I look for a certain size? I borrowed one and it didn't have the right end to it.

Thanks

I've bought a standard one from Halfords and it works a treat.
