I've been looking for an excellent air cooled for some months now, but most that come up seem to be up for more than what I consider is their market value. I've now widened my search & have started to look at alternative classics which I'd consider are possibly better value.

I hear what you are saying, Ive looked at all the photos and full sized them too... honestly and without wishing to insult your father but you have a £500 to maybe £600 car there. The 126 is only worth lots of cash in pristine condition, yours needs a lot of tidying and those rust spots will be much worse underneath.

Quite, I sold mine (also an '83 Brown) in a similar exterior condition with only a few minor mechanical issues for £300, admittedly less than I could have got had I offered it on e-bay but there really is no way you will get the asking price or anywhere near even £1,000.

I think honestly if you will sell this car for anything around £1000 I will personaly ask you to sell all my cars :) in this condition I would guess eBay and other sources won't pay much more than £350 - £400. No offence but it is just 126 in very average condition. Trust me I have sold MINT 100% original car without even one spot last year for £1300. And even for that I have to wait a month. I agree these small cars are much more expensive now but don't even plan for your father nowhere near asking price my friend. If you don't have to sell it keep it as few hundred quid is all you will get.

It may be worth spending a little bit on cosmetic repairs on the rust areas of the car and then try selling it for your asking price. You might make a profit or break-even.

We only want to give you an accurate opinion about what do we see!! I will show you something, this have sold for £1100!!!!!!! So have a good look - Do you see the difference?

It has nothing to do with us being naughty. If you would like to take a chance and listen we might be able to help you sell it for its MAXIMUM value. Nervs not needed at all mate! So calm down, have a read one more time and think about it, we are really friendly group. But very realistic :)

As Jan says, we arent slating it just giving a realistic appraisal. The rust near the aeriel is actually the base of the screen, take that screen out and itll be a whole lot worse! I can see rust elsewhere too plus dings and lots of marks in the paint. Plus the drivers seat wear, it all adds up. You state you are a mechanic, then you should know a 126 gearbox has a straight cut first gear and is noisy from new and not a fault ;)
Put in on ebay with a very honest description and wait and see what happens. Im looking for a 126 right now, has to be a good one and Im prepared to spend on one... but I wouldnt go for more than £500 for a car like this one.

It's a nice colour, a sort after air cooled & an early plastic bumper model with the more classic look dash, so It's got potential & with some work it would be a lovely car. Might be worth putting on ebay with a reserve & see what it reaches, that way you'd get another idea of how much people will pay, sometimes people go into a bit of a bidding frenzy on there for vehicles. Car & classic would be worth a try too as I think It's free to advertise. Don't give up on the Forum, they're a good bunch really! Good luck with your sale at whatever price!

From my experience LHD or RHD makes difference only if someone is really into RHD. They aren't daily drivers (at least majority of them) so it doesn't bother people. Facts are: small bits on your dad's car all adds up and small bubble of rust (even if only one) plust touch up (even if only one) is more expensive to get rid of than it is worth. So if you will take into account all "small" expencies and small bits to do it makes value of your dad's car lower. Especialy when you put it up for sale on a club forum where all of us know these small cans quite well.
I don't know anything about mechanical condition, but again, from my experience even 2 weeks without regular use makes a difference for them :) :) :)
So PLEASE don't take if hard - me and others are just trying to give you a real point of view. I wish you £2000 for it if someone will be happy to pay.
We all doing our best here for everyone who is new to understand fully what is going on. I am here just for a year but trust me - being polish I thought I ate all knowledge and I didn't. Have learned a lot.
So feel free to discus anything but try stay calm :D
