fed up ......
« on: January 25, 2010, 06:03:52 PM »
im in the process of replacing my speedo cable on my fiat 126 bis .

so i ordered a speedo cable for my bis from italy , bloke said it was for a 126 bis , but its about 8 inch longer than the one thats broken ??

anyway i proceded to pull the old inner cable out, and i knew it had broken off gearbox end . so i jacked the car up and squezzed underneath

undid the speedo cable from the speedo drive on the eng , and couldnt see anything or broken bit protruding , i thought  dam ..........

anyway came up with a injenious idea of using very very high strength magnets to pull the broken bit from inside the drive housing, to my imazment it worked ...

i fitted the cable, lengthened the outer inside the cab to accmodate the longer cable id been sent , and dropped car down and went for a test drive ..  nothing made no difference atall, cable doesnt turn when wheels in motion ??

so i am no better off, so i suspect y speedo drive is jammed or broken ?? but it cant be removed i dont reckon with out the tank coming off??? its all becoming a right nightmare just to know how fast im moving, im considering just using my satnav to tell me my mph .

anyway can anyone help ??? im fed up to the back teeth  ... helllllppppppp
if i have asked for help .thanks in advance for helping and giving me advice .. all the very best to you all .. respeck monkeymoves .......

I think the only way you could have a good look at it is by removing the gearbox and taking it off....

This may be different with the bis, but the aircooled cable output unit is a bolted on to the gearbox. It can be removed while in situ, by unbolting the one retaining bolt and wiggling it for dear life to prize it off! (make sure the car is not pointing down a slope or you will lose gearbox oil!)
If its knackered I have a few lying around for a couple of quid.

Why don’t you jack the two rear wheels up off the ground and put it on axle stands, disconnect the speedo cable at the gearbox end, and put something like a match stick into the square of the speedo gear (gearbox end). Start the engine put it in gear and release the clutch the match should spin.

If it does spin you have a problem with the cable or Speedo head

If it doesn’t you have a problem with the gearbox speedo drive

But please make sure that the car is supported well on the axle stands and take care with the moving drive shafts :yikes:

I too used your magnet idea. With a bit of tapping it came out. Perfect job
