Making the Fiat 126 a front-wheel drive
« on: November 09, 2009, 07:29:27 PM »
Hello my fellow enthusiasts. I've been trying to purchase this car for quite some time now, and now that I finally have a concrete offer, I will buy it. I'm planing to make minor modifications to the car, but by far the biggest one, would be my dream, to make this car into a front wheel drive automobile. Now, I have never done this sort of project before, but me and a couple of my friends have got quite a lot of experience, with the alltogether customization of cars, and therefore believe, we could succeed. However, any help from you would be much appreciated, maybe you've tried to do this yourself, or have some ideas on the project. Thank you in advance,

  Sincerely,
  Saras

Rwd is one of my favourite aspects of the 126!!  Sound like a very interesting project though and i will enjoy seeing your progress.  I have a couple of project cars if you need help with parts etc.

if possible, please give a description about the previous project you've mentioned, or better yet, give a link. I'd really like to see how someone else has made this work

I know I'm a fine one to question these kind of things coz I will try anything for a laugh, but I have to ask why?

There are so many small fwd cars available, why would you go to all the trouble and expense of converting one of the very few small rwd cars to an inferior and less fun form of traction?

I can understand the technical challenge, but as already said the best thing about the 126 is that the engine is in the back. I think this sort of conversion must be pretty difficult to do anyway.
Also I don`t want to be negative, so if this is your dream than you should go for it!

Or you could get one of these.

Well. The reason, for a front drive, is to improve our overall understanding, of a car. To know, what is where, and what it does. I hope you understand, what I want to say. Also, me and my friend intend to take part in some amateur rally competitions, with a FWD. So, experience is vital. And anyway, if it works, wouldn't you like to see a front drive fiat 126!? =]

Also, talking about the fun aspect. The fact, that the engine is in the back, and the base of the car is so short (hope you understand, what I mean by base), it actually reduces the fun. Placing the engine in the front of the car, would make the back more manouverable, and, in this case, more fun. Ofcourse, it's all just theory. It's really difficult to begin this project, winter is coming and I don't have a good place, to maintain a constant build on the car. As soon, as I have any updates, I'll let you guys know. Cheers
