BIS H913TYC
« on: March 19, 2009, 01:16:37 PM »
I've just joined the Club having acquired a 126Bis from ebay. It wasn't exactly a barn find, but had been laid up for 3-4 years. Intend to get it running, pass it thro an MOT and then consider what to do with it based on what i find. Looks pretty solid, but i'm sure there will be some scarey bits. Not a big fan of the colour, but the true condition will dictate what happens next. So here's the ebay pictures, plus spares, i don't collect it till the 21/03/09.

Collected today on an Aframe, flat tyre caused a delay, but its arrived now appears very sound, spare wheel well almost spotless! So now its time to cost the restoration as its defo worth some money spending on her.

30/03/09 update
Bissy has now made its final journey for some months, too its second new home in as many weeks. So the weekend was spent taking bits off, naming and boxing lots of small parts of trim. In addition for phycological reasons i wanted to get the little chap fired up. So i spent an hour or two working with the two carbs supplied, both incomplete/corroded to try and make one functioning one. The carb a "god knows what make" that looks like a Weber copy, were in pretty desperate condition. I acheived partial success it fired up and revved, then died, so either a blocked main jet or lack of fuel, or whatever.
Next Major steps
Strip, weld, sandblast, zincspray, etch prime, prepare, paint, reassemble. (Cream, blue or Red)
Refurb running gear, plus lower and stiffen suspension.
Retrim interior (possibly around original design theme) based on X1/9 leather seats that i have.
Strip, clean and re-assemble and install standard engine.
Develop and fit tuned BIS engine based around the logic being discussed in the tuning forum "Bis Power Improvements"
(cc700 head, cc700 Cam timing plus!, Electrionic ignition, single/multipoint injection).
More Pictures to follow as when something happens, lets hope something does!  :)

Spent today stripping out the car to find out quite what i'd got for my money. Really impressed with the lack of rust, it only has 1 or two very minor spots on it, quite a few dents of course, so next step is out with the Angle Grinder and possibly the welder, then off to the sand blasting/etc. once shes down to just the bare bones of the suspension. Engine and Gearbox out for a minor look over. Head off and a decoke/regrond valves, a Gearbox leak.

Stripped of most of the interior, all parts boxed and tagged. I removed the other door after these pictures. Obviously the wiring loom and Dash need removing, boxing and tagging. 3 shots of progress thus far

Well, not much progress this weekend. Garden Chores and other duties. Managed to get the shed base down which will allow me to store in the dry all the bits i seem to be taking off the Bizzy. The 3 hours i did get on the car allowed me to get the Engine/gbox out and subsequently split the assembly. The g/box mounts are tattered for sure. One of the other chores, a run to the tip, yielded the old Mattress i need so that i car roll the car on its side to access the underneath more easily. Need to srip all the underseal off before it goes for the sand blasting and Zinc spraying (post welding of course). Progress will slow still further after next weekend, as i'm walking Snowdon, up the lakes the next weekend and assembling the Tin shed. Then off Walking the Wicklow Way in Irelend, Girlfriends Birthday/etc, so prob late May before seriously get an update.  :(

Bizzy now on her side, i squeezed another hour on her. Car was roped and chocked further beyond this picture, but gives you a good indication of her current position.

I dug a tunnel to deal with the drivers door issue only took 4 days  8).

For those of you in the same place as me, ie restoring a vehicle, not digging tunnels.

Quote for Sandblast/Zinc Spray and etch priming the whole car including doors/tailgate/bonnet. This assumes of course that you have removed all underseal in the areas you want blasting and that you can deliver and collect the vehicle.

£250 for the sandblasting and etchpriming
£30/sqm for the ZincSpraying approx £45 for a 126

Zinc spraying is not Zinc Paint, it is the spraying of molten Zinc onto the freshly blasted body shell in vunerable areas sills/inner wheel arches/etc and is the closest i have found to Galvanising that can be applied to a restoration project. I had it done to a Chassis on a Triumph 22 years ago and still no rust. You still need to waxoyl of course, the zinc spraying only does the areas you can see. This is followed by the etch priming of course. I think thats good value. Hope its useful info for someone.

Hello! Your 126 looks like it is in good shape. There does not appear to be a lot of rust. I recently bought a 1990 126 Bis. There is only a bit of rust, at least visually. Wil get on a ramp to see the state of the chassis/underbody. It has an MOT, so hopefully, it will be fine.

Tcosy,
Could you kindly provide the contact details of the firm that gave you the quote for sandblasting, etchpriming and zinc spraying please. Presume they also do resprays as well. Many thanks - amateb
