Twin output coil + Ballast resistor wiring
« on: November 11, 2007, 07:55:40 PM »
Hi all

Just introduced myself with a picture of my uprated baby here - http://fiat126club.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2559

I've always had problems with my distributor, loose caps & bad connections etc. then the contact in the center of the lid completely disintegrated, I bought a new cap and this came without a new contact   so I've purchased a twin output coil :) problem is that there are no instructions on how to wire this baby up, so I wonder if anyone could advise me.

This is the coil & it has 2 sets of paired connector terminals. The left hand side is marked with a 1 and the right is labelled with a 15. It's 12v.

a) How are these terminals wired?
b) Do I still need the condenser on the dizzy? This is a standard dizzy that uses points.

any help would be greatfully received as I've been perplexed by this for months.
cheers

from what ive learnt, the black lead from the dizzy goes to the 15,and the power lead goes to the other side. You will still need the condensor as this stops the points from burning out.Oh and you will need a ballast resistor in the system to stop burning the coil out.

thanks DanRodd. Is this to say that both of the right hand (15) terminals should be connected to the coil and both the left (1) to the 12v? I would have no clue about a balast resistor, I have a electronic transistor ignition system from Maplin that I was advised to buy but I don't know if this is the same thing?

you only need one terminal on each side connected,it will still work.the ballast resistor gives a higher voltage to the coil on start up and then regulated the power going to the coil as the engine speed changes.without it the coil would get too much power and burn out.

Fantastic, DanRodd you are a life saver. Do you know if I would I be able to get away with a generic Balast resistor like this and how to wire it up? or should I try and get one for a 126 from Middle Barton Garage?

Ive only had mine a week but have had to replace the coil so have learnt fast lol! I would try and get a 126 ballast resistor,as it will be set up to give the correct voltage to the coil. You will need to find a late 126 wiring diagram to see how it all works, but so long as it is in circuit and before the coil it should be ok.

Ah I've learnt quite a few lessons that way. The coil came all the way from Malta so it'd be a shame to burn it out   I've just ordered a balast resistor from Middle Barton Garage http://www.racecar.co.uk/mbg/ at a shade over £10 and a new exhaust for £22 what a cheap hobby :) As you said I asked the guy on eBay and his general purpose ballast resistor is not suitable.

It gets cheaper if you get the parts in Poland. An aircooled exhust is about £6 :)

I'm heading over to poland with a friend of mine next year, any particular place to go? :) I keep joking that I'll buy a 126p whilst I'm out there and drive it back.

Go for it, have a look in here for a few ideas.

allegro.pl

Then put 126p in the search box and enjoy. £1 is about 6 Polish zloty.

I'm wondering if ballast resistor should be wired simply like this (in series with the coil?)   The ceramic shell is simply labelled with a +on one side and a terminal at each end. There is a short black wire connected on the opposite terminal to the + which makes me wonder if this is supposed to be an earth.

Please click to enlarge.
