Reducing cabin noise
« on: January 30, 2007, 09:04:22 AM »
Hi all,
I've got a 126 and I am looking for some advice to reduce the noise in the cabin when the car reaches around 100km/h (60mph).  I'm not a mechanic so I'm looking for something fairly straight forward without any major modifications to the vehicle.

Thanks,

Scott

hi scott, me and my mate bought "flashing tape"  once, and stuck it into all the doors etc of my mates VW golf. its the stuff that you stick onto conservatories or roofing to seal the water out, you can buy it from DIY/hardware stores

http://www.eabassoc.co.uk/Flashing%20Tape.htm

you can buy the professional sound proofing stuff which is expensive,

flashing tape did the same job,

Earplugs are cheap :)

decent radio?

Older ones had tons of soundproofing about 1.5CM thick, it was everywere, soaked up all the leaks and rotted the floor. Weighed a ton when wet too.

You can use underseal spray ( like tetraseal) for inside the door and rear panels, for the back of the seat and top i'd use a thick brushed on layer of underseal and stick new carpet on top while its still wet, it works quite well,
P.S. cut the rear carpet to size before you paint the underseal on.

Thanks for all your replies, I like the sound of the carpet idea although im pretty sure that there will still be a fair bit of noise coming through the body even with all of the sound proofing I could throw in it.  I have a fair bit of spare carpet lying around so i might give that a go behind the seat.

I'm not really fussed about all the noise, I just want to quieten it down enough to hold a conversation while driving!

I think Pink is your colour at the moment Mick, not sure about the sound accoustics of pink tho.       I have in the past used rubber foam backed carpet stuck on with underseal and behind the bulkhead used high density carpet underlay stuck on the same way. when dry, the underseal helps stop the panels from drumming/resonating and can be used on the inside of the roof to good effect too.
