Oil!
« on: January 24, 2007, 03:47:04 PM »
Hi all. I think I remember ages ago a discussion about oil - mineral v synth. The following article was mentioned on a Fiat 850 board and it made alarming reading....

Hope its useful and will help to keep a few more 126s running. Hope to catch up with some of you when the weather is warmer.

Chris - there's a nice looking early 850 coupe on ebay with your name on it...

hi Paul hope youre well mate,

you really shouldnt tempt me with these 850 coupes, certainly beautiful that one, yours is the sport version isnt it? Hows it running?

That link you posted up is excellent, i dont think people realise how important it is to get the right oil, i only use Halfords classic oil these days. not only doenst it look after the engine the high viscosity stops it leaking out of the oil seals!

i hope to see your 850 coupe in the summer!

thanks again!

regards
Chris

The article is American so I'm not sure of the situation here, but expect its similar. I think this ends the "mineral oil vs synthetic" debate - unless you are using something Redline (expensive here in the UK) then forget synthetics for these old pushrod engines.

Not tempted by the coupe then Chris? The goon who had replaced the pistons on mine hadn't centered the gudgeon pins (they are press-fit) so they had scraped the cylinder walls - 2mm deep trenches down two cylinders... Have now found another block and rebuilding the engine. So my 500 is still my daily runner for now.

Yes - look forward to some summer meets. Worst time now - the gritters are out trying to kill our cars.
