Headcloth replacement?
« on: December 05, 2006, 01:09:54 PM »
The headcloth in my '87 aircooled has always sagged a bit but has now started to disintegrate. The cloth part seems to be turning to dust and is coming away from the 'cardboard' stuff and falling on my head...

My first idea is to get a headcloth from a more modern car from a scrap yard and trim it down. :???:   Anyone tried this or have you any suggestions?

Thanks,

austin

hi,had the same prob, i pulled the head linning out, binned the crappy fabric, use a leather workmans  glove and the foam will 'roll' off the cardboard....easy
next get some rubber backed cheap carpet,i used some thin grey ribbed stuff leftover from a camper van job,,,,spray glue it on,then trim it around the cardboard.easy, then just refit.

before you rip off the old stuff, make a note of where they leave 'over hang'...it covers the bits the carboard doesnt,i used the old cloth as a template for the carpet

Thanks for the advice Dave,

Good to know it's easy to get off.  I'll try to get my hands on some carpet.  Or I have my beady eye on the headcloth from my mate's 93 micra if he hasn't taken it to the scrap yard yet... I could maybe try to attach it to the cardboard...  :???:

forgot to add, remove the big rubber trim at the top of the rear screen to release the head linning.......also once you have jiggled it around/got pissed off with it/finaly got it out..............try and re fit it as is..get the hang of it before you fit the new stuff.you gota kind of bend it and shove it forward at the same time from the back seat.........then pull back so it engaes above the rear window..................trust me.......i been there  ...............i could do one now in 5min flat!!!

oh,and my cardboard had bowed down as well....when i refitted it i put some ''sticks like poo'' in place, then propped it up with some timber off cuts..........
