gearbox oil or dexron III
« on: August 29, 2006, 07:48:48 PM »
Has any member used atf in there gearbox, last year at work we had an old ford manual gearbox rebuilt when i collected it they told me to refill the gearbox with automatic transmission fluid, because the fluid has the properties of being able to lubricate and dissapate the heat better than w80/90 gearbox oil, has anyone tried this or any of these super oils in there fiat,  80w/90 standard oil, semi-synthetic, synthetic or atf. at the moment i have an oil leak on one of the drive shafts so when i replace the boot i,m going to  drain the gearbox and refill, anything to make it feel better and last longer, your thoughts, Thanks.

hi Peter, well i think go with a 20/50 mineral, nice and thick, apparently EP90 damages the gbox so steer clear! You can gte all sorts of stuff to put in you gearbox to quieten etc, but you cant go wrong with regular oil changes. I think dave126 on here also uses a 20/50 in his gbox. after all this is what they were designed to use, its near enough the same gbox as the 50 year old 500.

regards
