Disc brakes, worth the swop ??
« on: December 25, 2016, 02:57:06 PM »
Ive seen a few posts about disc brakes and a few have on the forum have changed them.
Now i under stand that disc brakes are better than drums but i just wondered how much better they are on a standard 126.

My brake pedal is quite hard to push but it does stop you quite well with it being a small light weight car a guess but does fitting disc brakes make them any easier to press, improve stopping distance or is it just a looks thing?

cheers  :)

All I can say is that they are the best value for money mod ever. By that I mean for a few hundred pounds you get something that is genuinely worthwhile. The standard drum brakes are fine at bringing the car to a stop however I think that today's cars stop very quickly and unless you drive very cautiously you may find yourself caught out which is where the disc set up is brilliant. The car stops on a sixpence without locking up. Looks wise you can't see them very well so you maybe disappointed if that's what your after. There are other mods on top of that which you can do to compliment the discs which you can see in my thread but in short it's worth it :thumbup

No it's fine, in brief you need calipers from a 1.2 punto or seicento and a pair of adaptor plates oh and of course discs and pads. You can buy new kits online for about £300 but I did mine for less than £120 as I bought the adaptors seperate (£30) and second hand calipers (£40) and a set of pads and discs. You won't need hoses but I fitted braided ones.

It's well within the realms of a DIY mechanic - just remove the drums, shoes, wheel cylinder then the back plate. Then bolt the adaptor plate to the hub, fit the disc then bolt the caliper to the adaptor. Fit the pads then connect the hose (you need to make sure the banjo end doesn't fowl the bodywork on hard lock) then bleed them up. Easy days work :thumbup

The reason you can't see them is that the only place the caliper can go is towards the bottom (about the 4 o'clock position) and with steel wheels you struggle to see them.

I still have some spare laser cut adapter plates if anyone is thinking of doing this mod. Remember you need to be running 13" wheels  ;)

Ideal for the Bis as you can run the standard wheels. I think that the last time I mentioned these I offered a set of plates for £27 including UK postage. Tis the season of goodwill they say so I will stick to that  :)

OK no problem, I have a few sets left from the last batch I had made and no plans to advertise them in the near future. It is unlikely that I will get any more made so this will be a finite supply  :(
