Wheel questions.
« on: June 17, 2016, 11:05:12 AM »
Question 1.  Wheel bolts.
I've changed my alloys from the Minilite type over to a set of Cinquecento ones to run through the summer and noticed that the wheel bolts don't do up as much on these wheels - I'm guessing because the wheels must be a tad thicker.
On the Minilite wheels there was about 6 revolutions from engagement to reaching full torque.
On the Cinquecento wheels there is only 3 revolutions from engagement to reaching full torque.

Would you consider 3 revolutions is safe enough, or should I invest in some longer thread wheel bolts?

Question 2. Tyre pressures.
I'm running the Cinq alloys on 165/55/R13 tyres. The car would have originally come on 135/70/R13 tyres, so should I stick to the original tyre pressure of 1.5/2.0 bar front/rear or change to something else?

Thanks  :)

I would invest in longer bolts, don't like the idea of only 3 threads holding the wheel on. I run my GAMINE with 18-20 psi up front and 28 at the rear, this seems to work fine with even wear over the tread any higher at the front and the suspension becomes very hard.

You must have 5 full turns on your bolts to make sure they stay tight, I would urge you not to travel far with only 3 turns. I believe the standard bolt shank is 28mm long.

I dont know where you live but if you are anywhere near me in Slough you can collect some new longer ones from my works free with my compliments.

As said above you need 5/6 full turns, If you push the bolt through one of the Minilite bolt holes and measure how much is sticks out at the other side, do the same with the Cinq" wheel, you can then calculate what the length of bolt you need. be aware if you buy bolts that are too long they can foul on the springs that hold the shoes in place in the drum

Thanks for the advice guys, I've ordered a new set of wheel bolts off Ebay.

For piece of mind if nothing else, every time I hear a rattle while driving I'm convinced my wheels are falling off! Been checking them every day with the torque wrench and they haven't loosened up at all, but don't want to take the risk.

The thread length of the new wheel bolts I've ordered is listed as 28 mm long, and I've measured my old ones length at 24 mm, so hopefully the extra 4 mm will give me the extra turns I need.

Derek - I'm in Staines, so not that far from Slough, if there's any problem with this set I'll take you up on your generous offer.
