Adjusting valve clearances - help needed
« on: February 17, 2016, 10:24:29 PM »
Hi all,

I want to adjust my valve clearances now that I have the rocker cover off for painting. (:
In my Haynes manual there is a guide to this operation, but it shows a chart which I am not sure how to interpret:

Valve fully open         Check and adjust
No. 4                        No. 1 (ex)
No. 3                        No. 2 (in)
No. 2                        No. 3 (in)
No. 1                        No. 4 (ex)

How do I know which valve is which? Are they counted 1-2-3-4 from the front end of the engine or how is the logic to this?

Hope somebody can help! Also any other tips and tricks on valve clearance adjustments are much appreciated!

Best,
Mikkel

If the valve nearest the back panel is 1 then adjust 4 it works the other way round as well

It's "the rule of 5" so which ever valve has fully depressed you then add in your head the number needed to get to 5 so if valve number 2 is down you adjust number 3 (2+3=5)
