ACF-50 and Corrosion Block
« on: December 03, 2015, 05:31:15 PM »
Like most classic car nuts I'm always looking out for ideas and products to stave off the dreaded tin worm, and I came across ACF-50 today. A search on the Forum shows it has only been mentioned once, when it was squirted into a distributor to lubricate the bob weights - a mistake, apparently, as it is not a lubricant like WD40. Rather, it claims to be an "anti corrosion formula" - presumably the previous 49 compositions weren't as good!

Anyway, it's obviously been around some years and is well known to bikers and Caterham 7 owners, but I'd never heard of it before and wondered if folks on here had (don't all rush at once!!).

The great thing from my point of view is that you just spray it into dark corners and the like, and forget it. How easy is that? Seems you just need to do it once a year and it not only prevents new corrosion but also actively stops existing corrosion. What sprang immediately to mind is my poor little Giardiniera back in 1987, which succumbed to terminal rust in just about every seam and crevice and void, which were universally impossible to get to from the outside, and which trapped moisture and condensation by the acidic bucketful.

That much is history. How it works and how you apply it I will leave to the makers web site video: http://www.acf-50.co.uk/acf-50.htm

Although Corrosion Block, a sister product, is developed for automotive use, it seems ACF-50 is more widely used on motorcycles. Also, the makers claim a 12 months effective life for ACF-50, but only 6 months for Corrosion Block.

So, I've sent off my £14 to Mr eBay to get a can and see what it's like. This is not an endorsement as I've never even heard of this stuff until today, but the kit car folks seem to reckon it's the dog's private parts, and who can argue with that ?

If you've spent all summer restoring your pride and joy, you may want to consider trying this to protect the bodywork over the damp, cold, miserable winter months until once more we reach the usual British summer of damp, cold, miserable ......
