fuel gauge?
« on: November 22, 2015, 11:36:08 AM »
Hi all
Not sure if i have a faulty gauge or sender?

when i fill up with fuel the gauge wont move. I have too park the car with the ignition on and rock the car side too side, when you do this the needle rocks as the fuel moves about and it will go up a little.

I normally have to do this several times before it will read full. Once it reads full it works as normal and moves down as the fuel gets used until i fill up again and have too do it over again?

Anyone got any ideas what too test first.

I think your sender unit may be fu-bard. Perhaps the float has sank? The reason I say is because when you rock the the car the gauge moves slightly

cheers, i will have to take a look. Once it reads full after a lot or rocking and waiting it works fine until the next fill up?

I guess the only way to get to the sender is too drop the tank. Ive just looked under the rear seat hoping for an access panel lol

Hi
I`m Having gauge issues aswell today :( mine will not move,Is there a way to test the sender.
Mine seems to have been an issue for the last owner as the wires from the sender have been hacked about.

Thanks
Pete

You can test the gauge by putting the positive lead (light blue and yellow)at the tank to earth
The gauge should read full doing this
If the gauge doesn't read try doing exactly the same but nearer the gauge, if it now reads you have a break in your wiring
If it doesn't read the sender unit is faulty
The grey and red wire should put the low fuel warning light on
Hope this makes sense

P.S please be careful playing with electrics around the fuel tank  :thumbup

Cheers for the info  :thumbup, i will give it a try on a warmish day or if my garage is up before that.
For now i think i will on with the rocking motion and carry a bit of juice in a fuel container just in case it catches me out lol    :D

If you set your speedo on zero and fill your tank to the top you should get about 150 miles in town traffic :thumbup

My float cracked around where the wire loop wraps around so had sunk to bottom of tank.  Plastic gets brittle with age and I must have knocked it when putting the sender unit back into the tank.  I was not best pleased to have to take tank off again (especially as I had undersealed it and it was still tacky.  Make sure you use Rusty's tip of collapsing the filler hose with tie-wraps when re-fitting as it make a pig of a job much easier!
