air cooled engine in bis?
« on: January 09, 2015, 08:23:09 PM »
I guys I've had my bis for almost a year now and had nothing but problems with the engine. I cant find any rebuilt engines or parts to rebuild mine. However you can get air cooled engines and parts anywhere you look. So can you put the air cooled engine in the bis? And is it a strait swap?

Would there not be the problem of mounting an air cooled engine as I wouldn't have thought it would have the same mounting points as the bis which has the engine underneath the boot. (Maybe they could be welded on?)

It's not a great idea I'm afraid. Firstly as laners pointed out I'm not sure that the mounting points line up but that would be the least of your problems. The aircooled stands upright whilst the water cooler sits flat so IF you did ever squeeze the aircooled in you wouldn't be able to close the engine lid therefore you'll have the engine literally in the car with you. The noise would be hirendous so would the fumes plus the engine cooling fan would fill the cabin full of hot air - great in the winter, not so in the summer.

There are many parts for the BIS but I must admit there not as readily available as the air cooled. Try axel gersil (http://webshop.fiat500126.com) they have quite a few bits. If you can perceiver with your BIS engine it will be far better than an air cooled motor :)

I am with Gadge here , the mods you would have to carry out would cost you more than an engine rebuild. Also you would have to replace the gearbox bell housing and the diff if you ran a standard 126 air cooler. If you tell us your story of woe then maybe someone here can help  :)

Post a list of the parts you need with or without part numbers and I'll put my Google Italia skills to use and see what can be found.   8)
