Starter motor not turning.
« on: October 23, 2014, 04:29:49 PM »
Hi!

I've recently took out the engine from little Frank :D, changed all the seals, clutch and so on. While doing that I've also changed brushes in starter motor, because the symptoms were showing they're faulty.

I've put everything together and starter is not turning. There is battery power, all the lights are working.

Any ideas what might be a problem?

Thanks.

You have reconnected the earth strap to the engine, haven't you?

check the car is out of gear and then bridge the terminals on the back of the starter, if the starter turns the solenoid is faulty, if it doesn't there is a fault in the motor ;)

Pete126 - I've checked as you said, and it looks like is the starter itself. So I've took it out again, I think I've done something with the brushes, cause it was working (almost) fine before.
Here's the pics of the current status, maybe you'll whats is wrong.

Difficult to tell from photos, check that the new brushes slide freely in there carriers and that they make contact with the armature, failing that you may need to dismantle and test.

Found a couple of vids on youtube that may help ;)

Thanks for the advice, starter is working fine now. It was that little spring, it wasn't pushing the new brush hard enough :D

I've got new issue now though. Fuel pump does not take fuel. I've got half a tank left, so that should not be the issue.I'll do some checks tomorrow, worst case scenario I've got brand new one somewhere.

Another day of tinkering :D

I had to put new fuel pump in, then battery was to low to turn the starter fully. Jump start ;D.

Then engine mounting screw went (how, i don't know, but it did). When I fixed that and the engine finally started it was running so poor, I nearly cried.
Fortunately it was only points had to be adjusted and a little turn of the carburetor screw, and it runs like a dream again.
Didn't had a chance to road test it yet, (heavy rain as usual), maybe tomorrow.
