Looks like I need to remove the front cam chain cover to get to it then and see if thats all OK?

I was under the impression that a swiatek 385 cam for aircooled would work in the bis... as people seem to use the bis cam in the aircooled?

I think the crank and bearings are actually all ok...

But... nanni ricambi's 82mm pistons and 130mm con rods are tempting (piston compression would be -12mm from original to counter the longer con rods).

I tried to deglaze the bores a little with some tool my dad had to hand... pieces of emery cloth /sand paper that spin out to the bore... unfortunately to get it to go evenly the speed had to be quite high so a cross hatch wasn't really possible with the tool.

I decided to clean up the pistons today & conrods and weigh them... 4-5gram difference between the two! They started to oxidise after drying so gave them a soak in wd40... also snapped 1 piston ring :(, brittle thing... you live you learn was tempted to just throw it together and see what happens...

As for the damage to the bellhousing, it is a bugger for sure... and looks like something drastic as took place in its history :( lol. The bolt looks like its snapped off in the block so will be attempting to remove that tomorrow... may source a new bell housing or get my dad to fabricate a plate that will replicate the job!

Some pictures from today:

Cylinder 1 slightly deglazed but pitting still there... might be able to get away with it I guess:

Checking piston ring clearance... anyknow know what it should be?

Cylinder 2 slightly deglazed:

Con rods being cleaned in the sink for a while (Mr muscle oven cleaner and wire wool for afterwards...):

Afterwards:

Snapped piston ring :(:

Ahhhh the familiar sight of a BIS piston  ;D I had a snapped piston ring just like that so must be a common problem. Here's a link to the tool I used.

http://t.harborfreight.com/4-inch-engine-cylinder-hone-97164.html?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co.uk%2F .

Their not expensive and are available at machine mart or eBay.

The Reason the air cooled cam won't work is because the gear that drives the distributor and the fuel pump are in a different position plus the air cooled doesn't have the gear in the centre that drives the water and oil pump. However it's possible to have your BIS camshaft re profiled by a specialist to the desired shape. It's something I've thought about :)

Rusty needs to flog us his re profiled stash of bis cams ;). Lol. I think the ring was fine up until I prised it apart a little doh!

Ordered another load from fischer 500,  some new rings and a few other parts!

Well...

Still no better after rebuilding the pistons and renewing shells, seals, gaskets blablabla on pretty much everything! :(. Car is still smoking its head off when warm... doesn't appear to condensate... so is either oil or fuel... and i've done everything I can to make sure its not possibly oil :(.
