Mot passed Whoop whoop, but what a day.
« on: August 13, 2013, 06:41:12 PM »
Our BIS has been off the road since last year, loads of little jobs and not much time to work on it.
Booked in for MOT at 4 today. Get a phone call at 12, someone wants to buy my BMW and pick it up today  ;D, I've been using it at as a shed for almost a year so lots to sort out :(. Can't find the V5, it was in the last possible place it could be at the bottom. Arrive at my mates garage where both BIS and BMW are. Get the Fiat started on its mechanical fuel pump (which has healed itself) and it's bogging down and backfiring when the second choke opens :(. I'd put the jets in the wrong way round :$, swap them over and it's revving a bit high and letting out an almighty back fire when it is turned off, after the engine has stoppped turning. Have to sort out the BMW but the battery is flat so I can only open the drivers door, jump it and get it emptied of everything I want just in time for the bloke to pick it up. Do the paperwork and realise it has just gone 3.30 :o and the MOT station is 30 minutes away, no time to sort the Fiat. Lose my keys, find them in the engine bay five minutes later, set off, grinning. Get stuck behind a really badly driven BMW e36 ac schnitzer, decide to annoy them at the next roundabout by dropping back then giving it the beans so I can look impatient when I'm stuck behind them coming off the roundabout. Works as planned  :D . Keep having to brake all the way along the bypass, get to the next roundabout and the throttle is stuck open :o, but I'm late, I can't stop ??? ,get it through the industrial estates (scary) pull up at the mot station, turn it off and let off a huge bang. Instantly swamped by Ukranian mechanics, we get it running better and find that the return spring on the second choke isn't up to the job anymore. Get it in the bay, breezes emissions and everything on the ramps and lights. They turn it off. we all pop out for a fag break (pipe in my case) and a chat. Go back to do the brake test, will it start, not bloody likely. Push it on the brake rollers, no problems. MOTed  :wave :wave.
They shut the garage and go home, 45 minutes later I manage to get it going again. Fuel pump is only connecting the return and the send to carb, not the send from tank. Hitting and swearing at it with a bit of sucking and blowing get it going.  Think I need a new pump and return spring.
Rant over.
 Having a beer.

Would love to meet up with all of you fellow nutters. Once the fuel issues are sorted I should have the confidence in the car to do distances. Think I need a dead carb to butcher for parts, got missing vacuum linkages, no airbox or elbow and the gearbox mountings (think the MOT chap was so startled by the underside being completely rot free that he missed them  ;D ) This car has been a list of stupid jobs away from being spot on (mechanically) since we got it two and half years ago. Bit frustrating, but I do love the bloody annoying almost orange thing. Also the freindliest forum known to man helps make ownership a bit more enjoyable.

Cheers.

Marc.

I have renamed our car "T nob" (The near orange barsteward), for the rest of the week at least.
