Got no oomphff!
« on: March 09, 2006, 11:25:34 AM »
Driving home yesterday I encounted a very slight hill and lost all power.

- It felt as though someone had turned off the engine and was as quiet.
- Then at about 20 miles an hour as I changed down through the gears it kicked in and begun kangarooing.
- With the clutch depressed and full throttle it reved after a delay of a few seconds, but still kangaroo-ed when I lifted the clutch.
- Then all of a sudden it was OK for about half a mile before more of the same.
- I got home and it concked out at first, but would idle with the choke very slightly open.

What do people think is wrong?  I am going to check the points now.  I've never adjusted timing before and don't have a manual so some step by step advice in this area would help.  Could it be a problem with the carb/ fuel system? What's the best way to check?

Tim,

Had this problem with mine and it ended up being a bad float in the carberator.  It did that for a while and I kept driving it but within a couple weeks it was bad enough that the engine would continually flood and foul the plugs after about 20 min.  It would only start again after sitting for a couple hours.  That might be something to check.  I thought it might be an igniton problem too but at one point I opened the engine cover and found fuel seeping out of the carb from everywhere.

Sounds to me like fuel starvation of some sort, blocked jet would be my guess, or lazy fuel pump ? I would strip down the carb for a start. Are your HT leads in good order, a bit of dampness could have the same effect as I understand you guys have been having some pretty foul weather over there.

Sounds very much like a fuel Problem?
I would also replace the condenser the same time you do the contact points also check the HT leads connections to the spark plugs are not loose.

Thanks for all the advice. Problem now solved :D . All I had to do was change the fuel filter (which was black) and since then no real worries...

...except I had to fix the headlight switch + destroy and replace the fuel filler cap today... my little car was shut away in the previous owners' garage for the past three years and doesn't seem too keen on being out and about.
