Paintwork advice please
« on: April 02, 2012, 07:32:41 PM »
I have a white bis and i want to try some diy paintwork on it , what is the best way to go about it ?

Any advice on grades  of wet and dry, primer and paint to use and what compressor / gun to buy would be helpfull

I have been quoted £850 for a full professional job , but i feel i would like to tackle it myself

Go for it, I plan to one day. There is no way that I would pay someone that much to do something I believe I could do adequately myself, I know the first try isn't going to be great, as long as I learn enough to make the next try better, that's ok.

Cost of paint tools hours of man power etc soon mounts up to get the same finish I painted one car and three others down the road. 850 sounds like a fair price

Try painting the bonnet that way if your not happy you don't have to pay to get the whole car stripped. Then progress onto doors then when your feeling brave the inside then by then you would have a good understanding to tackle the whole car.

All the info is on google and you tube remember paint is 85% preparation(there's a link I put up somewhere on here tells you everthing.
2k paint is a better finish with less effort and more durable but a air fed mask or a good quality charcoal one will do the trick.

Good luck

Most of your money will go towards the compressor.
you should be aiming for at least 100l compressor and a syphon gun with a 500ml cup and approx 2ml needle.
These will cost you a few quid and might put you off, but it is worth it if you plan on keeping the car or repairing others.
The compressor doesn't need to be new and the gun doesn't have to be great. when you first start off your spraying will not be great anyway!!
Wet and dry can be bought at low cost from screwfix. The grades you need will depend on the work you are doing. 1200 grit for between coats up to 80 grit for rough sanding on filler.
Paint wise - 2K is best, but cellulose is far more forgiving. I would recommend you paint at least a few cars in cellulose before moving on to 2K.
This will cost you a ton of time - particularly if you want to spray the entire car.
Rust does not discriminate
