Mixture Screw Setting

Hi there,

I have recently bought myself a 126 BIS but have had 1 or 2 teething problems, it has had a new cyclinder head gasket and now runs fine... once you get him started!

I over filled the oil and have had trouble starting him eversince, have played with the mixture screw but not sure how many turn out it should be?  It is a webber carb, please can anyone help?

HELLO RACH  :wink:  .. FIRST OFF ALL IF YOU HAVE OVERFILLED YOUR CAR WITH OIL, I WOULD IMMEDIATELY TAKE OUT THE SUMP PLUG AND DRAIN YOUR CAR OF OIL , AS YOU WILL ONLY DAMAGE YOUR CAR FURTHER, AS I BELIEVE YOU WILL DAMAGE INTERNAL PARTS WITHIN THE ENGINE AND BLOW SEALS ETC ETC ..

I AM NO MECHANIC BUT THIS IS WHAT I THINK ,

ALSO OIL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR CARB , SO TWISTING IT AROUND AND STUFF WONT HELP YOU

I MESSED WITH MY CARB ON MY FIAT 500 ONLY TO GET IT TICKING OVER WITHOUT THE NEED OF A CHOKE

YOU WILL FIND ONE IS A MIXTURE SCREW AND ONE IS A IDLE SCREW ON YOUR CARB ...  

IF I WAS YOU I WOULD INVEST IN A FIAT 126 HAYNES MANUAL

BUT FIRST OF ALL EMPTY THAT EXCESSISIVE OIL  :!:

GET THE OTHER GUYS IN THE SITE TO ADVISE YOU FURTHER AS I AM NO EXPERT OR MECHANIC

Hi,

The first thing to do if you have not done so is to get the oil level right!
Otherwise it can cause damage to the engine and possibly slow the engine cranking speed.

Was the engine running ok after the cylinder head job was completed?
Is the starting problem when the engine is hot or cold?

hi Rachel!! nice to hear you have bought a BIS!!!

dont panic!! We are here to help, i see Chris and Richard have helped already,

i own a BIS, and i have had problems with my carburetta in the past, but your on the right track, because they made two types of BIS carbs a proper Weber (which you have) and a not so good polish one.

take off air pan to get to carb, let the engine warm up, then adjust the two screws i have higjlighted in red in the below link, untll the car sounds happy, i.e. doesnt chug, but do it gradually, dont do massive turns. The mixture screw is really hidden, but you can just about get a small thin screw driver in.

can i also add about the over filling of oil, it can cause oil pressure problems, and damage seels??

Hello Rachel,another thing is to check that the air filter housing is'nt filled with oil (the car might have dumped some oil there) I would maybe clean the carb out (using carb cleaner).Start the car hold the rev's at about 2000rpm then spray carb cleaner down the carburettor intake(you've already taken air filter hose off).Stop spraying after a couple of seconds (the engine revs die down as you use cleaner).Repeat procedure three to four times.After that check other things like points gap,spark plugs gap(was an electrode bent over on one of the plugs when the head gasket was being replaced?)The main thing is not to be disheartened they are simple little cars and when it's going right you will be smiling like an idiot,I know I do

HI Rachel, Bit late in the day as you may have sorted the problem.My  Polski Bis watercooled has  'cardborad replica ' Webber. Stamped 30DGS W. Also has 30S2H ....R stamped on the side on the bottom left as you look at the carb insitu. I bought a low cost re-furb kit from Fuelparts in England. WWW.fuelparts.co.uk they were very helpful. They will need to know which model you possess.
