Disc Brake Parts
« on: December 09, 2009, 03:50:25 PM »
During my investigation into what I thought would be the best set up for the disc brake conversion I bought a number of Fiat parts which I do not now need so just incase anyone is interested. I have some new and used early Panda Calipers & parts. A new later punto caliper etc. Plus along with my disc brake adaptor plates I have enough spare calipers & discs to put together a complete conversion kit for 13" wheeled cars & can even talk you through the conversion if you are a bit nervious about it  [-/

OK , I can supply a "kit" which would comprise good used Calipers , Calliper Carriers , Discs and new adaptor plates for £70 plus carriage. As for carriage you may have seen that Michael O'D is traveling north of the boarder for Christmas & has generously offered to ship any parts where possible. As for fitting perhaps one of the other guys who have used mine & other set ups might like to comment. If not I will give my view  [-/

Not a problem I can explain and help if required, I have fitted both Rusty's and my own conversion disc kits to both 500 and 126. I am only 30 miles away from Edinburgh.

Sorry if I am behind the times here.

Do you supply kits for the 500?
I have one that I am in the early stages of renovating  and am wanting to disc it up.

Thanks

Jon

The current situation is that the conversion for 13" wheels is all sorted and the adaptor plates facilitate the use of all standard Fiat parts which makes for a very ecconomical conversion. I have the initial drawings for the 12" wheel conversion but had to put all of my toys away for Christmas, apparently Christmas dinner and New Years feasts do not go well with heaps of Fiat parts on my dining table, so my good lady says anyway
There is much more engineering involved in the 12" conversion so it will cost more but if my plans work out OK it will be much cheaper and superior to any other set up that I have seen using Fiat parts & that includes the expensive one fitted to my car at present. I am hoping to find the time & cash to get a trial set up on my car in the next 3 months. If all goes well I will let the guys on this forum know first  [-/

It might be an explanation :) or Uncle was already making his own conversion to the jet engine :):):):)
Such a thing as Fiat 126p will never happen again to this planet... Love it.

Delivering all of those presents did keep me busy for a while  </4 </4
Yes I do have all the main parts to do the Disc brake conversion which would make quite a heavy package but I think you can send up to 20kgs for about £15 so that could be an option also if anybody was passing by this way you are welcome to drop in & have a look at the stuff. Also a number of people have just bought the adaptor plates , which I can still do for £26 including recorded delivery , then source the other parts localy or when they pick up an eBay bargain. New Cinque discs can be bought new relatively cheaply & if you are getting callipers from a breakers or eBay make sure you try & get the carriers & all of the little bits. As for pictures I did try & download the latest programme that was mentioned here to reduce the file size & it would not work , possibly because I now work on a little netbook. So if you want pics or have questions best to PM your e-mail address to me  [-/

Do you have a complete disc brake set for a 126Bis? I might be interested in one. Can you send some pics? Proietti is a selling a disc brake set as well but is quite expensive.

As I am sure many users of the forum can testify , I have written much about the disc brake conversion. As far as I am aware all of the few suppliers are expensive , I know as I bought one which is exactly why I started my own investigation over a year ago . Facing the challenge I put my time and money into the project . Net result is that the conversion for cars with 13" wheels is the way , way , way most economic system. If you are thinking of buying one of the current "off the peg" systems I suggest you ask to see the disc brake caliper carriers , discs and pads alongside the original Fiat parts. If it is a system for 12" wheels in my experience they are all going to be modified "specials" , structuraly weakened and replacement parts will have to be made to order ie if your pads wear out you are screwed. Non of the current suppliers of the full system , as far as I am aware , offer a spares back up system for the stuff they sell so you can spend £500 for a throw away item when it is worn.

Here is Ricambio's disc brake conversion advertised on ebay. It did not specify whether it is for a 13 or 12 inch rimmed 126. Looks kosher but it is expensive. Axel Gerstl and Ritz Handels GmbH are selling for a lot more.

That is pretty much the set up that I bought except I also had the adaptor plates that allow you to fit the original 500 wheels. It solved a number of problems at the time & kept my car on the road & through the MOT. My brakes were cr*p , wheel bearings & king pins shot.
However after removing the front wheels only a few times the threads in the low grade aluminium adaptors were stripping and that was just using a small wheel brace. So I had to helicoil all eight threads.
That one shown will be suitable for 12" wheels so it will cover the whole range of 126s. They work fine BUT whoever makes these has machined the disc diameter down to 206 mms , removed the front stucture on the disc brake caliper carrier to get down to that size, machined away the surface on the carrier where it takes the mounting bolts so less threads to bolt into to get the disc alignment and finaly machined a large section from the inside diameter of the disc brake pads , again to get down to the diameter.
