yer restorations are a logistics nightmare.
untill your doing it you can never tell how long its going to take, especially as your often waiting on parts or money!
you need some skills too, obviously you can develop them as you go but you gotta start somewhere.
how ever, its good fun and you have summut to show for it at the end!
if i were you william, do what me and a friend of mine are doing at the moment. Pick up an old chainsaw or strimmer; somthing with a small 33cc or 50cc engine (5 or 10 pounds down the local car boot) get an old steel push bike 10quid down local car boot, and attach one to the other. its a pretty simple thing to do but you would get a feel for engines etc. and there bloody entertaining when they're finished (if they work)
