looking for a project
« on: April 12, 2016, 01:29:25 PM »
Hi, I am looking for a 126 project for my sons to encourage them and teach them a bit of automotive basics, they are 13 and have old mopeds to play with but I really fancy a baby fiat and now is a good time to start looking. Is ebay the best place to look, or gumtree or through the forums? I am in west Cornwall but always keen for a road trip to collect with a trailer. I have some polish friends who have started sending me links to lhd cars in their native land, it is just the paperwork side of things that makes me cautious of buying one abroad, any info or thoughts would be appreciated

Mark

If you want a project that will be instructive, relatively cheap, and which will gain immediate and HUGE support from members of this forum, I suggest you read this thread:

http://club126uk.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=9392.0

The general consensus on here is that far too many 126s are being wasted irresponsibly by people trying to achieve the unachievable by putting some vastly overpowered and wholly inappropriate engine into a 126 - inevitably finding that it's far too complicated, far too expensive, far too time-consuming and just generally not viable.

The result is that there are many engine-less 126s available at relatively low cost, and somewhere there must be an equivalent number of 126 engines/gearboxes going begging.

If you could save just one 126 from such an untimely demise you would not only give your lads the satisfaction of creating a working car from parts, you'd receive undying affection from just about everyone in Club126 !

As a bit of a background story, we love going to wales each November to watch the WRC rally, last year we took a 1987 Daihatsu hijet, the 850cc one. We did 900 miles over three days avoiding motorways and including a trip up through Snowdonia, all at about 55mph. People put bike engines in those little vans and ruin them as well, this year I would love to do the trip in a 126 to make another memorable weekend. Thanks for your reply I hadn't thought to look for an abandoned project but that may well be the perfect thing for us

 Welcome to the forum.

What sort of project are you after? Would you prefer an air cooled or a water cooled one?

I`ve got few project cars here. Can send you more details if you are interested.

Aircooled appeals to me more but either type really, any details of what you've got would be good to look at please
