30s2 carb top butterfly help
« on: May 03, 2014, 06:31:40 PM »
Hi guys.

Finally replaced fuel lines and refit the tank + rerouted a badly done brake line and... I managed after playing with the dizzy etc, to fire the engine up for the first time.

However the butterfly on the top of the carb appears to be totally loose and the car ran/started much better when my dad physically held it to restrict air.

Any ideas what's going on there and where I should be looking?

Hope everyone's enjoyed there day!

There is a ball joint on the back of the choke lever on the carb, a rod runs from there to the butterfly. It goes up the right of the carb as you look at it in the car. Mine snapped, fixed it with an electrical crimp connector and liquid metal.

I bet you didn't get any pictures did you Marc? lol. Or can point out the location on a picture somewhere? Will have another look tomorrow but couldn't see anything earlier when looking at the carb before your reply lol.

I'd read about something breaking on these carbs and read that you'd also fixed something with the crimp and the liquid metal... but when I was staring I just didn't know where I was looking :D.

Thanks for the help!

Also... the oil looked rather creamy that I'd put in the car after doing the headgasket... I hope the block hasn't cracked somewhere... and it is just residual mayonnaise left from before!

I only have a kindle, computer died, so photos and stuff are a bit beyond me at the minute. On the carb you have the choke lever that the choke cable goes to. On the back of that lever is a little ball joint, the piece going to the butterfly has a plastic end on that houses the ball socket. I think it sits between the carb body and a vacuum unit.

You can see it on here. It comes down from the taller square bit on top of the carb and disappears behind the round bit on the left. It is L shaped and has a white plastic end going behind the round thing.

Looks like the whole thing is missing. No plastic on the ball joint and nothing going up through the hole upto the rod. :(.

Looks like I need a new carb!  The 32 icev I bought looks like I'd need an intake manifold to butcher to attach it at all. Lol.

Anyone got one lying around! ?

With a little playing with a couple of pieces stainless steel wire we had the choke operating correctly however a few pulls of the throttle was all it took to come off again. Will need to glue the clip end to the half moon on the rod I think!

I'm not sure if the starter is on its way out or the earths need cleaning up but occasionally sounding like it was getting a bit stuck and then carrying on...

Anyway, after a while today finally had the engine running and the car idling on the driveway for a while, whilst trying to bleed coolant. Think there might still be a leak somewhere, possibly bottom radiator hose :(.

Also... I noticed a horrid noise coming from behind the panel on the rear nearside quarter... almost as if a pump was running dry there... Whats behind there? I'm a little confused.

Temp gauge in the car never got above the middle really but I also never saw the fan kick in. Not sure it could get hot enough with the load.

If you mean the side panel then there is only the fuel tank and pipes. Could be a blocked breather I suppose, . Best to check it out though, could be dangerous.
If they aren't bled the temperature will typically rocket up, the fan kicks in over halfway, mine hasn't come for over a year as the car hasn't gotten hot enough.
Try cleaning the contacts on the starter, might sort it.

Hmmmm i'm not too sure what it is to be honest, I mean the outside rear quarter with the little air vents in... I can see a big box (but I think that's just the expansion chamber)... sounded like the noise was coming from there and sounded electrical/mechanical gone wrong lol. Very strange. Seemed to stop after a while though.

Cam cover was leaking which is a bit of a pain in the arse. Some nice mayo/sludge coming out there.

Gotta redo the tappets though so it will have to come off.

Perhaps this is how the original clip looked inside there. The rod doesn't come out though or does it? :).

Bees in the expansion chamber maybe :)
Mayo at the rocker isn't a good sign. Are you sure it isn't coming from the inlet manifold or the temp sensor housing? It runs down to the rocker cover bolts where it can sometimes mix with a bit of oil and scare people.
Look for antifreeze staining around both ends of the inlet manifold and around the entire temp sensor housing. These can also cause issues bleeding the cooling system

The mayo/oil I could see I hope is from previous contamination as when I took the sump plug out after draining much, it was quite a disgusting site. The head was skimmed/copper gasket fitted but the filter I'm guessing was totally full of this same sludge that looked like it was from the rear end of an ill guy after a boozing/curry session lol.

I had replaced the cork gasket for a rubber one but noticed when buying there was a notched one and unnotched variant. May need torquing up a little more but will investigate.

The oil/mayo I noticed was on the bottom of the exhaust.

I really hope the block isn't done for :(.

After running the car for quite a while, probably an hour or so the dipstick looked like it had cleaned up.

Oil level also didn't seem to rise but it wouldn't while it was also coming out of the cam cover I guess!

And I had previously sorted leaks out at the intake manifold where rubber has perished and also at the coolant sensor. Breather was pretty clean as was the exhaust after running to.

Took her for a very short run down the drive ;) and had a big smile on my face from the twin cylinder noise in the back.

It should be possible to stop the butterfly flapping by wiring it to the air filter stud, not ideal but should get it a bit more drivable.
Or remove the butterfly and bolt a plate across to restrict flow a bit, takes a bit of experimenting with flow but does work. You will still have fuel enrichment on the choke. A trick banger racers use.
