overheated?
« on: March 11, 2014, 12:30:05 AM »
Ok, I'm a bit lost, whats happening is I'm getting faint whiffs of exhaust (I think) smoke and smell in the cabin, until now I have attributed that to a cheap crappy exhaust I got from ebay which i have plans to replace soon but having read through the posts in the tech section here somebody was getting oil smoke in the cabin too, didn't know that could happen so wondering if I'm getting that too and don't know yet, so looking advice. I am going through loads of oil and it appears to be throwing it out over the engine bay and exhaust.  I'll try and add pics.  Theres a film of oil seemingly over most of the engine and after each run anywhere it sounds like its frying an egg. The cooling fan was recently replaced as the hole in the centre was worn to a point where it wasn't gripping the shaft any more so I'm worried I've cooked it. How would I know if its over heated?

??? also, anyone any experience with the gasket kits from Ricambio and 126fan? There's a huge difference in price between them.

Thanks for any advice guys, I guess I'm just looking some support before I dare crack open my first engine  ;D Such a great idea having a classic as a daily driver, lol

I've cooked mine too and I'm pretty new to 126's and water cooled so not a massive help here. :(

I've been looking at head gaskets however and the ones I've seen on Ricambio are copper which are made to be a lot more durable than the alternatives and made to withstand the Bis's hot running and overheating issues a bit better.

That's the one I'm going for unless I hear different.

Ricambio are good in that they have a good stock of parts and ship them out quick. 126 fan are a fraction of the price , the parts are good , they just take a little longer  :)
If your cooling fan was loose then I would say that you have certainly overheated the engine and it sounds like the push rod tube seals are shot.
Have you now got the complete proper mount for the fan ?
To perform properly the fan has to turn 50% faster than the engine so at high revs it gets over 8,500rpm.
The standard fan on my modified 500 engine let go at about 6,500 revs on the engine then the engine massively overheated when I tried to drive the 4 miles home. I did not make it as the engine died about 300 yards from home. When it cooled down it would not start due to lack of compression. Most of the cylinder head nuts were finger tight so I guess that the studs had stretched. I removed the head to check it out, all looked fine so put it back together and it ran fine for a while until I discovered that the studs holding the rocker shaft to the head had stripped. Fixed that and it has been fine ever since.

Panic over  ;D the poor wee car just has a bad case of idiotic owner.

The valve cover wasn't screwed down right and oil was getting passed the gasket and coating the engine. The frying sound was the oil boiling on top of the engine, sorted now and running very happily.

Often just the simplest of things :-) I'm a happy bunny again.

I have just had a bit of a similar experience where oil has been sprayed out over the right hand side , dont know if it was the oil cap not put on right ,but just had the oil changed and a new clutch and its running right at last  8)
