Non starter but why??

Parked up last night purring like a kitten.  Woke up this morning and nothing.

I've tried everything obvious and made an AA man do the same.  Yes there is a spark at both cylinders and you can smell the petrol as it turns over. However there are clues..

Plugs looked foul and black (probably just a rich mixture), occassionally it almost fires and runs very briefly on one cylinder.

What can it be?  I'm fairly stumped + ready to throw in the towel and let the local garage sort it out unless anyone has a bright idea.

over choked? first thing is clean the plugs,while they are out,spin the motor over(no choke).....re install,and try (with a fresh/fully charged bat) to start with no choke..........if it does try on one cylinder,just ''feather it'' on the throttle to keep it running till it drys out enough to run.............a low bat can give this prob,churning over but a weak spark,and choke will just kill it.
could be loads of other things as well i guess,but thats where i would start

the spark plugs working when out the head dont mean they work inside under compreshion (spelt wrong i think but its 3:20am) aa guys dont always no the anser trust me there

maybe your main jetts are blocked?

or maybe your fuel lines are partially blocked?

Its worth double checking the points, valve clearances and timing. Unscrew the idle screw and use a straw to blow through the starter jet to clear the crap out.  Disconnect the airfilter and try starting with choke on full and throttle down to let it breath. Its probably a combination of things. At least you have a spark!
