Snapped bolts!!
« on: July 04, 2012, 09:36:13 AM »
Any one snapped their driveshaft flange bolts? Have two snapped inside, any tips on extraction? Also, does anyone know the best place to get replacements?

Cheers

Yes, I think many 126 owners at some point.

I try to use higher quality bolts with a 20mm plain shank and have at least 40mm entering the ali coupler to get a decent bite as ali is pliable and will lead to losening of the bolts then shearing is inevitable. If tourqed correctly this will then be more than satisfactorily :D

Anyone up for doing a very quick guide for removing snapped driveshaft coupling bolts Wheel end)? :D :D :D :D :D
Planning to do it in the morning, the manual only has the list of stuff for suspension removal, hoping I don't have to do all that.

Cheers

I had that problems last year at the Retro Rides Gathering last year. I managed to make it to the venue in one piece after having sheared off three out of four coupling bolts. A piece of the bolts were stuck in the coupling. I had to call the rescue services after attempts by Forum members (Mick and Rusty) to fix it.

I've only got two snapped, and doing it at a landrover specialists, just not quite sure if I have to take the rear arms off, or the brake backplates or what.

this may do the job for you
http://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/lidl_uk/hs.xsl/index_32562.htm

So there I was on holiday and waiting for my other half to turn up. Found myself parked outside a Lidl store so nipped in and bought one of these kits as I was interested to see how it was supposed to work.
The two small bits are about the right tapping size for M8 & M10 threads. The cutting faces are reversed to a normal twist drill so the idea is that they bite into whatever you are drilling in reverse and get the thing to unwind. Not sure how weell it would work on a really siezed stud. The longer bit has a standard type 8mms drill top then lower down it becomes a sort of hobbing tool . It is designed to drill a hole then use the side of the drill to open up the hole to a larger size or shape. Would only work on sheet material. Well made interesting item that may get some use  :)

They call them 'easy outs' in Oz rusty. And I'm pretty sure they're designed to work on bolts. ;)

They do work on bolts, got one out, but can't get a decent angle to drill the second one, and I am really not sure how to get it all apart so i could do it on a bench. We call em easy outs in West Wales and Norfolk as well.
