Running the engine out of the car.. how?
« on: April 07, 2012, 01:17:02 AM »
Hello Chaps and Chapettes,

I'm planning on doing some home servicing to my aircooled and would like to run the engine while it's out of the car.

I'd like to run it preferably without the transmission, but how do you fit the starter motor properly without it?

(If you'd like to know why, well I think the clutch assembly I put on there 6 months ago is suspect, and causing vibrations)

Any other tips like what to mount the engine on? Seems some people just run it on its oil sump.  :o  Surely that's not good for it?

Thanks in advance,

Alleyniki

I guess that because some of the weight of the engine is held by the transmission mounts that you would have to fabricate a frame for the whole assembly to run the engine on. Or the frame would just hold the engine block with a plate or rod running along the back of the block where it could be connected to the bell housing mounts/bores.
