Dizzy timing following removal
« on: March 10, 2012, 08:49:00 PM »
It's official - I am a numpty.

I removed the dizzy for a good ol' clean and brush up - then span the engine over with it removed.

As there is much chat on here about the possible inacurate markings on the timing indicators - can anyone tell me how to be sure I have TDC and how to put the dizzy back where it came from - correctly timed!!!

Thanks in advance - feel free to take the p**s - this old bloke should know better. :D
(P.S.  126 air cooled)

Hi ya get yourself a strobelight for about £10 of ebay.
As for being a muppet I have just done something this week to my Bis( but my lips are sealed on that one) :$ Lets just say I can't believe I did what I did cuz if I did post it I don't think I could live it down :$ :$ :secret:
Oh as for dizzy I did exactly the same as you sometime ago, but if you look in the manual it tells you how to do it.

;D We've all done that :thumbup You need to find TDC on No1 Cylinder which is the one at the back of the engine, No2 is nearest the pulley's. Two ways of doing this one is to remove the rocker cover rotate the engine till the valves on No1 Cyl are fully closed this should also line up with the TDC mark on the front pulley and timing cover, then drop the distributor in and time up, Or If you have already timed the distributor up but the engine won't start the timing could be 180 Deg out, in that case line up the TDC marks, undo distributor pull out and rotate the engine one full turn then refit and time up. Being a subscriber the pictures are on pages 27-29 of the aircooled manual in the subscriber section

I did the same, had to lift it to access fuel pump bolts and accidently turned it. Found the old fashioned trial and error method worked.

So which one is it? Lol Haynes manual says one thing other manuals say another......

The cylinder closest to the pulley is at the top first??

Cylinders are numbered towards where the torque output is.
It's been mentioned before  ;D http://club126uk.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3229.0

Number one cylinder is always the one nearest to the timimg chain/belt with one exception in the Fiat/Lancia/Alfa familly. Who can tell me which engine it is? Rusty?

Why me ? I know nothing !
My best shot would be the new electric powered Fiat 500 or the old Fiat/Lada based Vaz that ran a rotary engine  :D
