Wasted spark conversion
« on: February 24, 2012, 09:42:19 PM »
Just a quick query...(I have searched but couldn't find the exact answer)

What do you need to do/change if you are going from a single coil ignition to a wasted spark ignition?

Pics of both and step by step instructions would be good, including parts required.

Thanks

FGN

(Still think its ignition causing my probs so I thought I would chnage the whole lot out for the slightly more reliable system...)

Hi! You need only the double coil and HT cables and, very important, 1.7 Om resistance ignition wire (#55) , cos this coil got no integrated resistance! This wire is sky blue and comes from the socket #48 on the left side, powered by the ignition key.

From the second half of 1991 they used to put a by-pass wire #72 with 2 diodes from the starter to the coil, so the coil has higher voltage when starting the engine. It's worth to do.

If you want to put any electronic ignition, you will have to power it with normal current, so connect it before the ballast resistor!

As you can see, there is condenser #66 on the coil. No idea why it stays there, but on the BIS it's shown like optional :$

Regards! :)

Deyan  looks like your picture is being reduced and to small for viewing on the forum.  If you can send the full size picture to [email protected]  I can sort out a higher resolution for forum viewing.

:) Right button and select  "View image".

Or use the link http://www.pf126.ovh.org/elementy/danetechniczne/schematy/5.jpg

To zoom certain area, click on it.

PS - the BIS could be upgraded with that by-pass as well :)

Thanks for the info

As i understand it then:

Remove old single coil

Install new twin coil, connect HT leads from plugs to twin coil

Connect earth from old coil to new coil

connect LT positve from dizzy to positive on twin coil

insert resistor in positive wire

It should all work fine?

(HT connections rotor and dizzy cap now redundant?)

Does anyone have any pics btw?

Hmm I dont think i changed the ignition wire when i replaced my coil with a wasted spark one. Is this something i should do? Will it cause me problems?

Can someone confirm my points above as I want to be sure before I order the bits and dont want to introduce any new problems  ;D

Thanks

Just posting this as a reference for anyone doing this that my summary above was correct and its all working fine.

The positive wire (this was orange on my AC) goes to the ballast resistor now mounted next to the coil, I added a short length of wire from the resistor to the pole marked "16" on the twin coil to complete the positive circuit

The black wire / earth from the dizzy goes to the terminal marked 1 (this had a plus on it too which is confusing)

The HT leads from the AC set up were long enough to connect directly to the plugs.

I replaced the whole distributer in the end but the normal A/C one would work ok with the twin coil, just remove the rotor, and change the cap for a flat one if you want the complete look.

I have left my old electronic ignition kit off for the moment as its all working fine, but to connect to the twin coil the positive feed needs to go before the ballast resistor, and the condensor can be binned.

The timing was completley out after fitting the new distributer, I just kept rotating it until the engine would fire and run, then set the timing up using a timming lamp. (I bought one with a loop which goes around one of the HT leads to trigger the lamp and its really easy to use)

Changing to a twin coil is actually really simple to do, the coil came from "ricambi-fiat-500-spare-parts-1957-1975" on ebay and the generic ballast resistor came from "accu-spark" also on ebay

Thanks to all for help given and I hope this summary helps annyone else trying this mod :)
