Hi Guys and Girls,
Tom here (Pris) from Maidstone in Kent, but originally from Plymouth in Devon. Finally joined the forum, and love the 126!

I don't own one yet, but hope to purchase my first 126 very soon. Don't quite know what i'm looking for, and dont know alot about the tech side of things having never owned one but im here to learn....

Just wondering what sort of 126 I shoudl go for as a newbie, and what will I need to look out for when buying one?

I dont mind one that needs slight work as that makes it more fun, but nohting too major due to lack of space.

How much should I be looking to pay for a 126?

2 choices, Bis or aircooled, Bis tends to be easier to find, is watercooled watch out for cooling/ head problems.
Aircooled, a real 126 (only joking) A bit slower and tempremental than a Bis, but .......... Never mind

Look out for rust underneath, inner wings!!! It will have runt at the bottom of the screen inless you are very lucky, and ,most have a rusty spare wheel well in the front, and some rust around the lights.
They are not like a modern car to drive, they bounce around a lot and rattle and shake. spares are cheap, running costs low, but this is not a modern car, not a Micra or a Smart.
Have I put you off yet? Prices watch Ebay! Ã‚Â£300 up to Ã‚Â£8000 if you want an as new rally car.

if you find the right person, you can get one for les than 300 pounds. i know theres a value difference here, but i bought two for a total of au$300 (only one is complete with engine etc)

i cant say too much, as i have never seen a bis for real, they didnt get released here. but i LOVE my air cooled, having driven a friend's for a while, theyre not as bouncy as youd think, but they definately arent the smoothest cars around. go slow over speed bumps! and we had four decent si zed guys in an air cooled and it still drove ok, wasnt TOO slow. plus it looks like air cooled 126s are easier to work on.

yep, the bis is water cooled, and it has the engine stuck on its side in a smaller space underneath an added cargo area in the back, which is why i think the air cooled 126s are probably alot easier to work on, since you can pretty much get all around the engine with plenty of space around it. not to mention a much simpler cooling system. the bis however has a rear hatch which the air cooled does not. i personally like the look of an air cooled rear end better though.
