Earths
« on: January 03, 2019, 06:34:54 PM »
Having sorted my charging issue finally with a brand new alternator I am now experiencing other intermittent electrical faults.

The car is not over charging I have checked and double checked.

Periodically the indicators stop working, I have fitted a new flasher unit twice now, normally after a while they start working again. The other day my mate told me I had lost one tail light and my indicators were on solid and not flashing. Poked everything and it has been fine since.

Tonight the indicators have stopped again, I have lost a tail light and neither brake light is working. The horn also ceases to function.

Could someone help me and tell me where the main earth points are so I can check they are all tight?

I love this car but I also hate it sometimes!!

Cheers
Simon

To have so many things intermittently work and fail would mean it must be an earthing issue.  If you look in the bonnet (front) there are three earth points. One is by the brake resoviour, another adjacent to it on the other wing and the third is by the battery. The two on the inner wings control a lot of the fuse box stuff like lights whilst by the battery is the main earth for the battery. Give them a thorough clean up with some emrey paper. There's also one in the engine compartment by the exhaust which earths the engine plus I belive there's ones behind one of the rear lights.

I've also experienced electrical issues with the indicators. Mine would either stay on or simply not work. This in the end was caused by two things, the first was simply a dodgy connection on the front indicator bulb holder and the second was the flasher unit was strangely too wide to fit into the terminal it was supposed to go in thus wasn't connecting properly with its terminal. I simply relocated it and problem solved.

Last year my engine would slowly loose revs and eventually cut out when the cooling fan cut in. This was down to a poor earth so I not only cleaned it up on both ends but I also fitted another one to a different point and made a world of difference - I never realised just how important it was!
