Bis handbrake cable
« on: July 28, 2016, 07:37:33 PM »
I need to fit a new handbrake cable, mine must be stretched.
Nothing in the manual

I am a little confused how you get the cable into the car.
I saw on another thread about removing large grommets, where are these? On the that panel under the car where everything appears? Had a look cannot see any.
Anyone have any pics?

The cables run into the rear bulkhead just in front of the gearbox. If you are struggling to find it look for the gear linkage and follow that back as the handbrake cables and gear linkage go into the body at the same point. If you pull the carpet back inside the car you'll see a metal cover. Under that is where the cables fasten to the handbrake handle. You have to fit thread the cable from inside the car towards the brakes through as you rightly said a large rubber grommet.

If you have a Haynes manual it should be covered in there somewhere  :)

So I need to get at the area just in front of the rear seat? I don't have to remove the centre plastic panel?

You may have to remove the plastic panel around the handbrake lever as you need to slacken the lever off. The cable loops around a wheel at the bottom of the lever so after you've threaded the cable through the grommet you then loop the cable around the wheel then when it's on you then move the lever forward again and tighten the lever up.

And yes it's the area in front of the rear seat. If your under the car look towards the front of the gearbox you'll see all sorts of cables and hoses going to the same point.

Found it thanks, I was focussing my attention under the car. Haven't got a Haynes, didn't know they made one for the Bis, just have a fuzzy black and white PDF book.
You have to remove the plastic cover as the rear screw in it goes through the metal cover plate, plus one seat belt anchor to make life easier.
Looks to me that it would be simpler to remove the handbrake lever rather than fiddle about with the pulley in situ. Mine needs a lick of paint anyway.
Bit worrying that the handbrake/emergency brake cable appears to be held in place by adjacent perished grommets but will see when I get around to completing the job.
It is a hefty cable so I am surprised it has stretched.
Thanks for the help

Well that was a fiddly waste of time, I decided to change the cable because the adjusting nuts where hanging on quite literally by a thread, exactly the same with the new cable even with the slight adjustment that can be made at the handbrake end.  The inner cable just seems to be too long, the actuating levers look fine. However if the inner cable was shorter the return springs would be completely compressed. New shoes, drums fit tight.
