Title: sporty Bis exhaust ?
Post by: neil 126 on May 12, 2006, 11:39:20 PM: having removed the rather restrictive air cleaner and box, and creating a crude filter from a wet and dry vacuum, this allows good air flow in to the carb but i still think that things could be improved with a sports exhaust.
where do i get one?
i have seen that there is sometimes some for sale from germany (sportasspuff) does anyone have one of these?

Post by: 126dave on May 13, 2006, 08:41:50 AM: hi neil,yes the exhausts are availible from germany, a local guy has one,looking at the one he has,it looks pretty standard to me with just two outlet pipes welded on.......still looks big and heavy and useless !!!

i was thinking of fixing the inlet pipes to my bench,cutting the can off,and welding in a micron motor bike exhaust.............i know it would'nt be gas flowed etc,but better than the standard crap maybe?

at the mo i have the dreaded baffle rattle on mine,drivin me crazy!! its an aural rev limiter!!

Post by: neil 126 on May 13, 2006, 02:32:50 PM: hi dave i have been having real trubble with the stamdard baffle box exhausts, the last two have split at the bracket welds and this one has separated at the exhaust to manifold flange, both units have doen less than 1000 miles. i have been thinking about getting a stianless one made to measure.

Post by: bis13 on May 14, 2006, 07:59:39 PM: hi neil it looks like you have the same agro as i have , i have bought a perfofmance box from germany . this box i have yet to receive is a single outlet type . if it turns out to be crap on the performance side it might still be a bit more robust than the stock rubbish , i live in hope.....

Post by: neil 126 on May 18, 2006, 12:12:06 AM: nice lookig piece of kit bis 13, let me know how you get on, i see it doesn't have any secondary mounting brackets, just the manifold flange. i think that might be the reason behind my faulty stock exhausts i will try fitting the new one without the brackets as they must have been under stress.

Post by: PaulB on May 18, 2006, 08:54:09 AM: I think if you fit an exhaust just using the head flanges it will last about 10 minutes - the head and tubes will be under huge stress from vibration and heat - the engine vibration from one end and exhaust vibration from the other. The brackets strap the exhuast to the crankcase, so the exhaust and engine vibrate as one - low stress. On my aircooler a mounting bracket sheared off. I had to drive on, but the exhuast was in pieces within a few miles - melting my wiring so I ended up being trailered home.

As someone else implied - exhausts fail because they are sh*t.

Post by: 126dave on May 18, 2006, 06:34:25 PM: i agree,brkts are vital..its the fitting thats crucial as well tho................same as aircooled,fit exhaust,tighten elbow joints,then tighten brkt bolts,checking if they fit right,i always shim my brkts from the block (if needed) so not to pull exhaust one way or other,it MUST BE RELAXED when tight...treat these things as aircraft were vibration is one of the main killers and you wont go far wrong..this applys to all sorts of things on 126's..........you must always use thread lock and/or new spring washers.............also VERY important if you fit a remote/electric fuel pump,you MUST allow for movement in the pipe work,a curl of pipe is the best way.
vibration is a massive problem on these cars,thats what was causing air/mixture reversal in my weber carb=huge flat spot (thanks to the blitz site for that info,it saved my sanity!)

Post by: neil 126 on May 18, 2006, 09:58:44 PM: right then,i am glad we sorted that out, i have tried to fit shims and adjust the angle of the brackets before so as to not put them under stress but nothing seems to work, just thought i would try something different in desperation.

Post by: bis13 on May 19, 2006, 09:34:32 PM: fitted box and i also have ran car and it appears that my head could be okay will find out when i give it a bit of a run and boot it! the box now makes my car sound like a harley ! not too sure if i shall like it but its on now so bollox to it.
