CAN ANY BODY TELL ME HOW I CAN LUBRICATE MY DAUGHTERS 1986    126 STEERING RACK THE CAR HAS BEEN LAID UP FOR 8 YEARS AND SOUNDS DRY THANKS

ive never done mine Dave but i know mine should be done, cant tell you how though someone will

youll probably find it is the kingpins that are dry, jack it up and youll see two grease points on each stub axle, just pump a grease gun until clean grease comes out of the seals. not aware that the rack could be greased?

Never heard of steering needing greasing. Well never done any of my 126s anyway

Aside from the king pins there are a few places the steering may need some attention. Looking under the car, there is a ball joint at each hub which has a rubber cover. If either of these has split, the whole rod is best prelaced as they are self-lubricating and will have probably been contaminated. If the rubber is just in poor condition, but intact, new rubber seals can be used.

Further in towards the centre of the car there are rubber bellows on each side of the rack. These are partly filled with grease, so if they have split they need replacing. If they are dry and the rack has become stiff, then its best replaced, as worn steering is potentially deadly.

Its all covered in the haynes 126 aircooled manual 1973-87 models (you need this late version for the later steering) - available on ebay for a few quid. There is a BIS manual free online - its probably covered in that as well, and I'm sure the steering is the same for both 126 BIS and late 126 aircooled.

ive only ever done my king pins, made a hell of a difference, steering became nice at light.

I don't think there's much else to do except replace worn parts. Older 126s have an old steering box that needs an oil change now and again.

really paul,steering box? on a 95? wow,my 87a/c has a rack i wonder what made them go back to boxes?......oh by the way,i was'nt have'n a pop at all mechanics in my other post...........

Don't worry yourself Dave I know that.Did'nt even think that.I know too well there are some butchers out there(and they don't sell chops) :D I think all the 126's for the home markets stayed with the steering box.Don't know about the bis though!!

i thought my de ville had a rack not a box, although my memory sometimes plays tricks on me.
