I'm 15, so I have a lot of time on my hands in order to restore/modify this beautiful car, I have currently stripped the engine and gearbox out and soon to be rebuilding it. I am then going to be saving to have custom coil overs made, front disc's on (I know about the adapters etc.) respray, new wheels, new seats which I have just need to make some brackets, fix the engine, and then few little things to the engine... Any other ideas for things I could to this?

I know what you mean about what most youngsters are wanting lol, at first I only bought this cheap to practice my skills on as I a fancied a job in this kind of trade. I've now fallen in love with this little beauty! And I've got most of GCSE's now ;) A in science A in maths and A* in English for a 15 year old seems fine for me now ;) just saving up for all the parts I'm needing lol

I agree with gadge that most younger people don't like the smaller slower cars.
i have two 126s, one i have had since i was 17 im now 20. but i'm one of a few.
I'm also on the opel manta oweners club and there is a 15 year old on there doing the same thing with a manta but he had just finnished a morris minor that he had been restoring since he ws 12.
I like the seats,and the car looks good.
anyway good luck with you project and im glad your not just goig with the crowd like everyone else does, as said before golfs,civics ect. :good:

I got my 126 at 17, I'm 20 now. I now have 3... Daily driver and resto projects. This forum is very good, and useful, there will be lots of help here if you need it.

There seems to be a pattern here, I had my first one when I was 17 :D there's just something about them that others don't get....... Sometimes it's not all about speed lol
As a car enthusiast there absolutely fantastic to work on as they are so simple. If your young then there great to learn on too :) you'll find it'll annoy the hell out of you at times but just press on and ask as many questions as you can! Most of us have taken ours apart more times than we can remember lol

thats true Gadge i have had my car for 4 years( i forgot i was actually 16 when i gt my first 126) and i have had my gearbox out and striped/repaired 2 times and my engine remved about 10 or 11 times and copletely striped one time and hd the head off one other time, i have had the carb striped cleaned and adjusted more times than i can reember(that means probaby more than 20 times because i run out of fngers and toes :P). i don't think there is any part of my 126 that i havent striped or got to know in one way or another.
basically enjoy woring on the car mainly because there so simple and when ou finally get to drive it on a tight twisty road you will know what all the swearing was for. ;D

Damn your making me feel old and useless at 26 ;). I wish I'd taken more of a practical interest at an earlier age... if you're interested in things and end up seriously thinking about venturing into engineering (and with such results...) you may want consider maths as a primary further study I can't stress how much I wish I paid more attention in maths at school and higher levels when going into any kind of higher education regarding engineering (mechanical/electronic/automotive!), thats if you want to go that way!
But then again... some panel beaters know nothing but the hammer and they're work is impeccable :D.
Good luck with your project, I look forward to seeing more... and its my favorite color! I'm wondering whether to paint my bis in the same color or leave it in NHS blue!
I've had all kinds of cars (rear engined MR2 <3 was one of my favourites from my earlier years lol.) but I have to day I learned things slightly backwards in terms of cars... electronic fuel injection and ecu's and sensors telling you whats wrong (although not always the case and a pain in the arse to fix half the time tracing wiring!) and now I have this purely mechanical 126 that shows me the simple side of things to break it down a little easier!

i was offerd my first when i was 19 motd and for £35 lol am now 46 and have my first 126 but am on my 3rd 500 my last 2 where 16 years ago , so last year i went looking for a 126 to do and ended up with 126 and 500 lol , u can buy one finished but need to spend good money , if u spent some desent money without bursting the bank u can get a nice wee learner project to learn on and wee can all sit watch dish out orders lol, and enjoy love the seats owen n w 8) ;)

I've now bought some new seats for the little lady, and a little cover bless her :) so these old classic cobras(in the photo) are now for sale,
I Did love them, however I am quite a porky little lad it was tricky for me to clamber in and out of them as it was like putting an elephant in key hole, I was comfy to start but in And out became an issue, so let me know :)

I spent all my youth on mini,s and didnt get my 126 until I was 41 wish I had got it earlier much cheaper and just as much fun as a mini, keep up the good work young bloods

I wished I had owned a mini. I was a mechanic in the 90's when they were as common a sight on every street just like red phone boxes. I drove a fair few and thought they were great fun yet never bought one and now there silly money......... Ahhhhh memories of the first gear whine are priceless :D

Ah, nostalgia... it's not what it used to be...
Thread hijack here, but hey, it's wet and November and Sunday: back in those good old days, you knew you were in Britain because there *was* a red phone box on every corner, and a Mini in every street, and everyone had milk delivered to their door. Every brand of car was different, you'd never mistake a Ford for an Austin, every high street had British shops in it like Woolworths and Dixons, the trains were rubbish and always late, and the rain was warmer in the summer. Yes, you just *knew* you were in good old Blighty.
Today, go into any town and you know you're not in France, or Germany or the USA, and we still drive on the left. But not one of those old cues is still there to tell us we're in Britain. Shop signs are in a foreign language, milk is ordered online along with every other shopping item, all the cars are grey (sorry, "dusky moonlight graphite silver mist", aka grey), they all look the same and the only ones actually made here are Japanese. Phone boxes are an historical curiosity, and the village post office is a franchise tucked away at the back of an Italian coffee shop.
And yet... and yet somehow, we still know we are in Britain. But how? Is it by default? Is it that we know we're not anywhere else, so we must be in Britain? Or are there contemporary cues that have replaced the old ones? Are there 21st century idiosyncrasies that are peculiarly and uniquely British, that tell the proverbial Martian landing here that he's in Britain? And if so, what are they?

Yep, I'm not going to lie I had saved up 3 grand for a mini project, then my grandad became very ill with cancer so I put all my money towards helping him and my nan live there lives as easy as possible with all the best health care I could afford for them... He and my nan are both back up and fighting fit! But it did only leave me with 500 for a project, I hadn't even seen a fiat 126 before in my life until a lad near me (who owns a little nippy metro) said he had one I could have for 400! And ever since I've blown all my money on this, my mountain bike and motorbike.... Better than drugs and alcohol, speaking from experience there! I'll keep you all informed of how I get on! :) thanks again

Got me some new seats from a freind,
Very pleased with these as all I had to do was help him with his engine swap in a ford finesse with an st engine.... Anyway back to the start aha

Very pleased with them apart from they only just squeeze in, with adaption I can get them to fit in sure ;)
Few minor scuffs but a nice little upgrade from the originals that squeaked about lol
Should have them fitted for the end of jan due to Christmas, New Years and also having exams at the start of jan

Not the longest 2 but the next two and then I could clamp those down with the one you can see set away from the group on the photos above :). Took me all day because every bolt I got to was insanely rusted or rotten, all part of the fun lol 😜

Wooooo! Finally got my hands on an engine! It's a k reg Subaru wrx 2 litre turbo engine and with new bottom end bearings will be running great! Also going to begin the major strip down tomorrow night after work I think. It's going to be updated later on as I shall be stripping down the engine to see if anything/what needs replacing etc. it's gunna definitely be a tight fit, this is 34inch as the only one is about 25, but if I fit turbo, inter cooler etc, all snug around it I reckon I can do it after a while lol,
So, here's to nothing! Got a 12 week holiday coming up so I'm hoping to get the majority done then :)

Dom Subarugears now advertise on eBay you could fit a scuby gearbox to deliver all that power. Only problem is cost, the conversion kit is £1,500 and a converted gearbox at £2,995. If I have to change to an ej20 I will try the gearbox conversion kit.

Ooh, I'll have a look into that gearbox conversion kit then, I was originally thinking a 944 gearbox (most around £100) and then I've had a quote or £150 for full new internals putting in,

I'd been told the previous guy had already drained the oil....turns out not.... Was quite a shock lol

And then after removing the exhaust manifold, off came the heads, pistons look brand new, as if been informed already,
So that's it for today, exams Wednesday then got a week off so should be able to get it all split straight in half next week all been well :)

Ahh right, very snug indeed! I have thought about shortening it already but not found a solution as of yet, due to exams, once I've completed them I have a 12 week "holiday" so while I'm not working I shall be devoting my time to it :) what have you done about the exhaust and radiators etc?

Mines n/a so I don't need to worry about a turbo, making my exhaust a lot easier to fabricate. Radiator is going up front with a grille cut into the front panel. Something else you'll need to consider is the alternator, the rear "cross member" is in the way, I'm thinking of getting a tiny race alternator and make a new or modify the bracket. Once I start making progress on my build I'll start posting. Look on beetle engine swap sites. They've done the swap so many time its down to an art. Great place for top tips. Good luck with the exams.

Like a camel with a firework up its a##e I imagine ;D ....... It would almost certainly be undriverble over 40mph and unstable around corners with all that power - and that's if it fits in, which it won't because it's too tall and by the time a suitable gearbox is found it'll be too long so it will hang out the back even more. He has been warned :D

I know it's going to be a very hard project (that's if I ever do get it finished)
The truth is, non of us know how it may/will handle due to the fact it's a rare conversion, Im altering all shocks and springs etc for custom made ones, I am doing it all properly so if it needs money spending it shall get it.
By the end it may handle bad yes, it may only be fun in straight lines or it may even not work.
However I don't need comments such as Gadges above.
I got sick of it before with most of the forum against me, seems that nearly everyone on the forum is against any, and every suggestion I have, don't like my thread, don't read or comment....
So to answer these few question,
I plan to spend quite a sum of money on trying my best to make it handle to the edge of its capabilities.
I also intend to use my friends unit to try out several gearbox's and sizes in order to find the correct one to fit for my situation.
Sorry for the rant I just don't want people to just spend there time slating me before I've begun as they were before. So I did as you say "nipped it in the bud"

Sorry Dom I know it's not what you want to hear but that's my take on this project. Part of this forum is about sharing your experiences and seeking advice and support and I just simply can't support it. It's all very well saying "if you don't like then don't read" but it's a public forum and if advice can be give then we, the reader, have the right to reply. There are people on here who DO know what they're on about and they have tried to give you advice but you don't listen :(
As I've said before I'm passionate about theses cars and there numbers are dwindling by the week by this very strange quest of trying to fit the most powerful and biggest engine inside one "just for fun" and the fact that you've just admitted that it may not work means that this (in my opinion) is a lost cause. I'm NOT against modifaction - just look at my car .
Sorry to poo poo your thread so I shall keep quiet in future. Good luck with your exams btw :)

It doesn't matter though, still going to go ahead with the build, if it works I'll be immensely proud of what I've created. If it doesn't work I shall just fully restore the 126 to standard.
Don't know how anyone can be mad about that?
But, enough arguing, it's happening and I'll inform people of my progress as it's made, Thankyou for your advice everyone

Hi all just to point out that Z Cars have completed this conversion in a 500 and are now selling conversion kits to fit 500's so they should fit a 126, very expensive. They use a Subaru shortened box with a reversed crow wheel and pinion. If you look up Z Cars Subaru engined Fiat 500 you will see him comment on the handling, this is for the 1800cc scuby married to a 126 box. The ej20 engine conversion they completed was on their web site with a short test drive. Dom keep up the good work, can't wait to see your build thread.

If you are on Facebook look through 2014, 2013 for more Subaru fiat conversions, also some photos of new front suspension. Also look at the videos here you will see an ej2.5 in a 500 at the start of its test drive oh listen to its first start up what an amazing sound/roar. I want one. I think the conversion includes the subagears gearbox conversion.

Got myself a new turbo from a lad I know. Didn't really want a td05 because of its sheer size and the amount it was meant to cost but when he's selling this one for £40 I can't go wrong lol! Gave it a bit of a scrub up but sill loads more to clean up on it, bearings should be hear next week at some point so once I get a gap in exams I'll be fitting them :)

Right, after long deliberation I've decided to name him "Neil"
Because he's going to look normally ish and then it's called a "sleeper" when they are still fast, the only animal I could think of was a sloth,

Had a free day due to the rain so I set hold of stripping my engine further,
Took last few auxiliaries off and removed all bolts but after cutting all down my hand I've signed off for the night ready to start again another day :)

Got some wheels from my sisters boyfriend for £40! They are 4x100 so it's an awkward fit but it'll do for me at that price! They do need a refurb but very very pleased with them! They for rub slightly on the front but it was only a quick little test fit today so I'm sure I'll be able to sort that issue!

They look great! Wobbly bolts will get you around the PDC problem or if you have the room a set of hubcentric spacers with a conversion of 98x4/100x4

Currently the wobbly bolts are doing the job but it depends how safe they turn out to be when j do some research

They are ct's, (cheap and tacky) but they don't need to be anything special right now anyway, and 15" so quite large running 7j I think it read, not sure on tyre size though

Sold the recaro half leathers in order to help pay for the rest of my build so they had to go 😠but £70 back in my pocket for some seats which realistically wouldn't fit means either more upgrades or better finishing products :) lets go!
