Title: Car wont start..
Post by: DeVilleChris on August 03, 2014, 03:48:09 PM
Hi all,

Just after some advice!
I cant seem to get the engine to start at all..

Ive changed the points, condenser, coil, leads, plugs, fuel pump and fuel hoses for now.. a bit excessive I know but i want this engine running.

It just turns over and turns over and over and over but wont fire at all, its not even kicking.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Chris

Chris have you got spark at the plugs and fuel in the carb?

Yeah I just checked both plugs are sparking, and there is fuel into the carb I think, there is fuel coming out of the return so I think so anyway..?

Try to swap the spark plug leads round on the coil.

Have you ever had the engine running or is this a first time start up ?

Just a thought as it happened to me the other day. I did a points change and refitted my distributor quarter of a turn out by mistake by that I mean as the gear in the end engaged with the gear in the engine it turned the cam back about a quarter thus the points were opening at totally the wrong time. So all that happened is that it just turned over. It was simple to fix I just turn the engine over by hand to TDC removed the distributor and turned it so when I refitted it the cam was just about to open the points. It fired up straight away.

Unusual not to even get a pop if you have got fuel and a spark. If you have got a simple timing light, ie a 12v bulb with a couple of wires connected to earth and the distributor feed you can check when the points open in relation to tdc. If that is ok I would try a teaspoon of petrol straight in the carb to see if it fires.

Jumping on the car won't start wagon here with my bis. Reassembled with a cc700 head yesterday and today... but alas I can only get the occasional cough from the car. I managed to get the car semi running by having throttle on full and the choke on full. But even then it was only just about running very badly.  :(. Car was running pre disassembly although burning oil (replaced valve stem seals in the head in hope to see if it'd help before buying pistons/rings. Timing looks right according to static timing and timing light but wondering if it's nowhere near for some reason. Going to compression check this head tomorrow to see what happens but really gutted at the minute... the car is making me never want to touch another car again lol.

I think Rusty's idea about putting a small amount of fuel directly into the carb might work, could be a fuel pump thing...

Rusty you nailed it. A bit of fuel down into carb and it fired for a few sec, then I put the plastic elbow back on too of carb and it doesn't. Any ideas?

Great now you know that it is fuel related so you can forget about the ignition. If the engine has not run for a long time you could repeat the "treatment" a few times to see if anything frees off or clears but be careful with the petrol. If you get no joy check the fuel supply. Disconnect pipe at carb & stick it in a jam jar , turn over engine to see if fuel is pumping. If that is ok and still no go then a strip down and carb clean would be next move  :)

Thanks rusty. I have checked the fuel supply.. It's all working, so it's going to have to be carb strip can clean. Any tips for it?

Also the carb mixture screw is strange, there is no spring on it, its just a screw into the hole, its not like that on my other cars, is that usual?

I think there should be a rubber O ring on it, this can fall apart.  Sounds like you need to get that carb off for a proper strip down. I found that the well in which the gauze filter sits can corrode up. It might be that you need to get yourself a bucket of Vinegar and give the carb a good soaking. :-)

I will take a carb off one of the spare engines for now, and have a go at stripping the one thats on now.

Does the float and needle move freely up and down.

Success!!

After lots of tinkering and messing around, lots of carb cleaner and scrubbing, the car is running!  ;D

 >:( >:(

So, today I repaired the choke cable and starter motor cable by replacing them, and it ran fine before this, the timing was a little out but it ran...
Then got in the car and attempted to start it, after it turned over a couple of times there was a huge pop.. Now it just turns over but won't start.. I still have sparks at the plugs and fuel going through the carb...

1 step forward 5 steps back

like you said its probably just the timing. thats proberly what the pop was just unburnt fuel.

hopefully you fix it again, i probably spoke to soon. :(

If the engine runs for a short time then dies it is generally fuel. If it just pops and bangs then the timing is out as the unburnt fuel fires up either though the carb or the exhaust. Either way you will blow out any spiders  :)

Ok rusty thanks. Well it doesn't even start at all now, it just turns over and turns over, do I just need to sort out the timing?

And any ideas why this would just happen after running before, and now it's not... I'm stuck.

I had this issue with mine. Cleaned the carb like 5 times just incase it might decide to work but no. Then I was told to check the float wasn't full off fuel and it was, tiny little hole seeping fuel in. I replaced that and have had 1400 miles free driving. Touch wood. Hope this may help and you sort it.  Also have you checked the small filter inside the carb isn't blocked
