Right then, recently had a issue with my bis not starting, i replaced the float as it was fuel of fuel. since then it ran fine for the first tank of fuel now it just ticks over coughing light black smoke starts to slow down on idle then turns off. any ideas please??? im trying to find a mixture screw as i think its runnning rich but cant see it anywhere. its running the standard carb.
-
Lol... this is uncanny... we're having the same issues :). Car was running fairly ok... but as soon as it got warm... it still wants to stall and smokes even worse!
Theres not much adjustment... just an idle mix adjustment screw at the bottom on the front of of the carb (looking at back of the car)...
Theres a couple of other screws but I see some people saying they do nothing and the only modification you can do is with nozzles...
-
There has to be some fuel adjustment somewhere on these things. Or a replacement carb that's better than this polish thing. I've just come back from an hours drive and was not taking it easy on her. When I got back. She was behaving with no issues (touch wood) so see how the 50 mile trip to work goes tomorrow morning haha
-
The polish carb isn't really that bad in all honesty spec wise compared to the weber dgf equivalent, may even be better in stock form :). As soon as I get this thing running right, and an MOT on her i'll be tempted to play with nozzle setups! Where abouts do you work? Perhaps I might see it pottering around :)
-
Well she got me to work. Built up speed quite nicely without any issues so far. Really do you think it's a good carb. Il keep hold of it then. I work in Nuneaton so 52 mile round trip everyday for my little BIS. Where abouts you from?
-
I'm around J11-12 of the M6 here. Not managed to get over 20-25mph in my bis yet and with its oil burning issues it seems I couldn't really get much more... also a little hesistant I think but I have nothing to compare it to. :). Got to remove an exhaust stud from the CC700 head which is well b**gered and having issues before I can reassemble to see if I still have the same issues... although i'm tempted to strip it down entirely but I want it on the road sooner rather than later! :)
-
Well mine has now packed up completely. Died on the M6 earlier. Got it home now but don't have a clue what's wrong. It's getting fuel, got a spark, nice new air filter and fuel filter. New carb gaskets. Started to give up. I've had it 2 weeks and broke down twice and been recovered
-
Have you checked the timing and points?
-
Thats a shame to hear! Not managed to put my head back on yet as I can't compress the valve springs to replace valve steam seals no matter how hard I try :).
Did it breakdown in any particular fashion? How was your temperature/head gasket looking? It didn't die in a cloud of white steam/smoke did it?
-
Thats a shame to hear! Not managed to put my head back on yet as I can't compress the valve springs to replace valve steam seals no matter how hard I try :).
If you turn the head on its side and tap the ends with a hammer you'll be able to break the seal and compress the spring. Just a few hard taps. It's the collets they stick on the spring retainer
-
My dad did give them a bit of a tap yesterday... I decided to try and do it without the valve spring compressor and could compress them slightly by standing on them and bouncing lol... but when I remembered I had to stop the valve moving on the other side I could barely push at all. :(. Guess I'll keep trying today lol. Sorry for the thread hijack :).
The rubbish I was trying to use is a VS154... just makes me jealous of the hydraulic one I got to see in action at the engine shop with the last head!
-
No fashion at all just lost all power and does on me. RAC got it going last night said was a dodgy lead so he sorted it and it done it again this morning at 5 am just before I got on the M6 again. Perhaps he don't like the M6 lol ...... OMG it just started. I got in from work just now put the key in and it started sat here ticking over. Now I'm confused.
-
Hmm... these cars test us! My first all mechanical car and first car with a carb... ridiculousness eh! Now I can see why EFI is the way things are done... and glad I have the latter down :).
Managed to push the one valve spring with a socket, magnetic pickup tool and a pair of vice grips to push down on... but it was a two person job as someone had to lift the magnet as I was pushing down in order to collect the collets... Saying that, only one of them came out and I was then able to use the spring compressor without requiring 5000lb of force! Although I mashed my new valve stem seals being a little heavy handed :(. Now I need to locate some more! If anyone has any around? :D
-
That cc700 head is causing you too much trouble I really think you sell it to me and be done with it ;D
-
did you always have the fuel filter on the car. i'm just wondering wether there is some dirt in the carb.
is it definately a carb mixture issue there is a small posibility of you losing your compressison because of the valve clearences being too small so when it gets hot it plays up.
hopefully you get it sorted, i hoped the float would have sorted all your issues.
-
Yeah always had the filter on there, i replaced it with a new one and had the carb out and cleaned it all out. Now you come to mention it he was quite noises tappet wise. But all of a sudden the noise has quietened down. Don't know if it's to do with me driving back at 40 mph in second all the way home. This morning he has started straight up and has been ticking over for 45 mins with no issues. Just to scared to take it off the drive lol incase it breaks down again. Shame really because the attention the car gets is unreal. My area is full of done up jap cars and slammed vw but they always comment saying how awesome he is ;D
-
Haha, yeah Jap scene boys all over the place here with civics everywhere! Got a VW myself but would rather drive the 126 if I could for the thrills of 26hp. What color is your bis? :)
-
I know the power is ridiculous lol makes me laugh. My one is red. Car is mint tbh. Been out in it today and had no issues. If it breaks down tomorrow when I head towards the M6 I know it's the M6 it's hates lol
-
its the same here as well with the jap/vw (even a few ferrari's) cars but oth my 126's have always got more attention(especially my yellow/orange 126), I know that as a fact as my mate had a civic(mb6) vti
and was following me and saying how many people were looking at my car.
shame theres nothing obvios with the fault I find they are the worst ones. hopefully you will find it soon.
-
Hmm I'm back to this now... got car started no smoke... gets warmer and starts smoking (looks white but smells like oil perhaps!) Then eventually starts choking up and cuts out, can keep it going a little longer with the choke but even that doesn't work. Different cylinder head, new valve stem seals, same problem :(.
-
Must be rings :( it's the only other way oil can get in surely
-
Perhaps, just feel like I'm clutching at straws :(. Spent as much trying to fix the car as I spent on the car so far and will need to buy another cylinder head/intake manifold gasket to try anything else. Not to mention the hours, oh the hours! Looks like I need to take the engine out and gearbox and strip them completely down. Would of preferred a reasonably priced 2nd hand one to appear though that either works or can be worked on away from the car lol.
-
Poxxy what sort of mileage has your engine done?
Is there any mixing of oil/water, or any overheating issues when you run it up to temperature?
-
The clocks say 20k or so... so wouldn't of thought it was rings if that was the case... bought the car with no history etc and had to plod along the whole time waiting for parts to arrive from foreign lands... spent what I paid for the car though since in trying to get it on the road :(.
I really appreciate electronic ignition though with these bloody rubbish points and condensor... I never really appreciated them properly until trying to get this thing running right :(, and those sensors I hate that go wrong... at least they tell you whats going on! Water does not appear to be mixing with the oil... had the original head skimmed and was fitted with a copper gasket. Compression was high but engine ran with the smoke pouring out the back. I have a video on here somewhere. Decided to try new valve stem seals on a cc700 head I bought from Poland and fitted that but with a normal gasket out of the big engine gasket kit... now I'll need another along with an intake manifold gasket and jesus christ god knows what else :(. lol.
-
Have you checked the compression, because there might be a crack in the piston( only needs to be a hair line crack) that gets worse the hoter it gets therefore burning oil and losing power.
Mike.
-
Kind of, will have to check again tomorrow. Where would the piston be likely to crack? The top is smooth as butter... quickest way to drop the engine might be useful hehe. How'd the drive shafts disconnect?
-
well normally it is the top of the piston. the trouble is you get the carbon deposites and this causes hot and cold spots and his normally causes it to crack. its my only thought wth your probem that makes sense because if its the piston rings then it would soke constantly and it would not realy run cold or hot.
what ever happens i hope you manage to fix your car.
Mike
-
Thanks for your input Mike, much appreciated. Guess I shouldn't order anything without a full stripdown... just not sure I have it left in me :D.
-
Don't beat yourself up bud you were right to have suspected stem seals. I would've done exactly what you done. Although at 20k it's unlikely to be pistons or rings, it would seem that it's in that area that the problem is (unless your extremely unlucky and fitted duff stem seals). My old engine had only done a reported 9k when I discovered a broken oil control ring on the piston although it never smoked it just rattled.
DONT GIVE UP! I had nothing but bad luck with my 126 in the first 3 months of ownership and in the end a complete engine strip and rebuild was the only way to sort it and now it runs like a dream. I'ld love electronic ignition but to be honest as I've found out very recently by replacing a duff distributor, a properly set up dizzy works beautifully. Hang in there bud :)
-
I think in all honesty, even after rebuilding i'll need to source a new/decent 2nd hand carb... and would love to know how to tell if my dizzy is knackered... seems to be a little play on the shaft when doing static timing... move it one way then gotta move it more the other way to get the light to come back on etc. Not sure if its normal or not! lol. Going to start taking it apart today and get the pistons out. Then I think a dry/hard bedding in is in order!
-
Compression test is ok... 9.5 and 8.5 bar but had 9.5 bar on the one reading 8.5 yesterday and 9.5 on one that was reading 5-6 bar yesterday... do I carry on whipping apart?
-
Just drained the oil and got some on my hand to notice it smells a little petrolly, anything that could be causing it or anything linked that could cause problems? Might not be, could just be mineral oil as I've never really used it before lol
-
Do you remember what the very top of the block surface was like? Perhaps there's damage and it's not sealing very well?
-
Block surface is all good... stripping it down at the minute. Stuck trying to remove the sump!
-
Mineral oil does not normally smell like petrol.
-
I don't think the fuel pump is leaking... had the sump off today and pushed the pistons out... found some nasty looking rough surface on the cylinder 1 wall (unsure whats its been caused by, perhaps water/rust damage when the head previously died and overheated way before I bought it if water was sat in there? the head did warp on that side so might make sense?)... also the top edge of the piston may be slightly worn where it has been rubbing against... unsure if the piston rings are at blame to be honest, they seem ok unless they weren't span around the correct way to not allow blowby...
I'm wondering what the next steps are now! :). New block? Or can I get liners? Perhaps just honing it out... I don't know... :(. If I could find suitable pistons i'd have it bored out a little for some more displacement. Perhaps someone can help (and maybe might have an explanation)! :).
Attached pictures after another day of laboring away :).

Looks like it has been stood for along time with water in number 1 cylinder,
If it was mine i would use a [glaze buster] (http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cht259-3-legged-glaze-breaker?da=1&TC=SRC-glaze%20buster) to clean and crosshatch the cylinder walls and buy a new set of piston rings unless you can find a good secondhand engine :)
-
Looks like that might be the way forward... never seen that tool though, doesn't look like the normal honer! Will have to see if I can see some documented crosshatcing with the tool. A new block with installed liners is kind of tempting at 150 euro though :(.
Guess I can balance the con rods and pistons on some cooking scales while I wait for the new rings to arrive if I find they differ! I can't really run new piston rings in though once installed as its not road legal :( lol. Also not sure the carb is up to it and seemed to be struggling to give me full throttle and not opening the secondary butterfly as it should be, when done manually the engine just bogged down! Need to figure out the adjustment on the POS 30 S2HR but its seen better days really! :).
I need some con rod bearing shells and was tempted by the new pistons and ring set... but looking at them they should be OK really!? I've seen worse from peoples experiences with engines that run without this much smoke lol.
EDIT: Seems the glaze breaker might be the option as it removed less metal than the hone tools i've seen :). Wonder if I can get a 45 degree cross hatch at all! lol.
-
As long as the liner isn't badly pitted it should do the trick,
(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/pedro126/glaze_breaking.jpg)
-
I had very similar damage on one of my bores but it was quite as bad as that but not far off. I too used a drill powered deglazzer which cleaned a lot of it up. Also one of your pistons seems a lot blacker than the other so that does seem to be the problem bore/cylinder. I must admit I'm baffled at your problem as everything seems normal from your photos other than some pitting and dis-colouring on a piston.
-
Yup, bit of a pain in the arse! The cylinder wall is a little pitted it seems to be honest... guess i'll only know by attempting to deglaze it a little and get a crosshatch on there. But seems like i'm gonna be spending money for no reason and more hours labor... really didn't want to put it back together without finding something solid to go on :(. Can't take any more disappointment lol.
-
Have you looked into buying a second hand engine. It may well end up costing the same but without all the hastel of sourcing pistons and rings and going though more heart ache of it not working again
-
I've looked... but where they're hiding I don't know! Lupo TDI over on vwvortex had a brand new engine from somewhere a few years back :(. lol.
Thinking about going all out at the minute...
Today I removed the block from the bell housing, found some damage to both the bell housing and the starter where the bottom right stud from the block goes through... totally missing. Is the starter meant to be like that?
Also the rear crank bearing sounds a little noisy to me.
So parts list so far:
Piston Rings
Con Rod Bearing Shells
Crankshaft Bearing
Tempted by:
Bigger lighter pistons (if I could find some suitable without going custom!)
Hot cam
Forged crank

If rebuilding the engine, best to do it in style while its in pieces... but could be an expensive lump of useless metal at the end of it :( lol. smallcox offered his time/balancing services if I manage to come up with something to take to him! No replacement for displacement though and sounds so tempting to go down that route if possible!
-
I've been advised to look at the fire trap somewhere near the oil breather pipe? I did see something resembling a spring in the bottom of the crankcase/block sitting there... maybe thats off this firetrap? or is it just an aircooled thing?
-
The damage you pointed out on the starter area most deffinatly shouldn't been there (I've certainly not seen it before) it looks like a bolt has been cut from it in desperation at some point however it still looks like you can pass a new bolt though it ok enough. Unfortunately hot cams aren't available off the shelf for the BIS - and no the air cooled one won't fit.
The fire trap is a square(ish) piece of metal and 1 inch by 2 inches with a few holes in that swings on a little hinge. It sits just under the oil filler neck inside the front cam chain cover. Not sure how affective it is.
-
Looks like I need to remove the front cam chain cover to get to it then and see if thats all OK?
I was under the impression that a swiatek 385 cam for aircooled would work in the bis... as people seem to use the bis cam in the aircooled?
I think the crank and bearings are actually all ok...
But... nanni ricambi's 82mm pistons and 130mm con rods are tempting (piston compression would be -12mm from original to counter the longer con rods).
I tried to deglaze the bores a little with some tool my dad had to hand... pieces of emery cloth /sand paper that spin out to the bore... unfortunately to get it to go evenly the speed had to be quite high so a cross hatch wasn't really possible with the tool.
I decided to clean up the pistons today & conrods and weigh them... 4-5gram difference between the two! They started to oxidise after drying so gave them a soak in wd40... also snapped 1 piston ring :(, brittle thing... you live you learn was tempted to just throw it together and see what happens...
As for the damage to the bellhousing, it is a bugger for sure... and looks like something drastic as took place in its history :( lol. The bolt looks like its snapped off in the block so will be attempting to remove that tomorrow... may source a new bell housing or get my dad to fabricate a plate that will replicate the job!
Some pictures from today:
Cylinder 1 slightly deglazed but pitting still there... might be able to get away with it I guess:

Ahhhh the familiar sight of a BIS piston ;D I had a snapped piston ring just like that so must be a common problem. Here's a link to the tool I used.

Their not expensive and are available at machine mart or eBay.
The Reason the air cooled cam won't work is because the gear that drives the distributor and the fuel pump are in a different position plus the air cooled doesn't have the gear in the centre that drives the water and oil pump. However it's possible to have your BIS camshaft re profiled by a specialist to the desired shape. It's something I've thought about :)

Rusty needs to flog us his re profiled stash of bis cams ;). Lol. I think the ring was fine up until I prised it apart a little doh!
Ordered another load from fischer 500, some new rings and a few other parts!

Well...
Still no better after rebuilding the pistons and renewing shells, seals, gaskets blablabla on pretty much everything! :(. Car is still smoking its head off when warm... doesn't appear to condensate... so is either oil or fuel... and i've done everything I can to make sure its not possibly oil :(.
