Title: BIS Kingpins
Post by: poxxxy on June 17, 2014, 07:46:24 PM
Hi guys,

Finally gave the little bis a small drive and noticed a rather bad knocking coming from the wheels and through the brakes... might be something going on with the brakes but I decided to check the play in the front wheels... holding it at the top and bottom 12 and 6 o clock and shaking it theres plenty of movement. And I think its from the kingpins...

Are the kingpins the same on the aircooled as the bis?

I think its probably a good idea to change the wheel bearings while I'm at it. Do I need any special tools to repair the kingpins? The stub axles and all bolts look pretty rusty so I think i'll have fun removing everything!

Hi, not sure if the air cooled and BIS are the same but I have a feeling they are? You'll need normal basic tools to remove the hub/stub axel assembly then once out you'll need to strip the whole thing down so you'll need to remove all the drum, shoes and back plate then drive the top bush out. It's most likely you'll destroy it by doing so, so buy another - there not expensive. Once that's out you need to undo the plug at the bottom of the swivel joint. You'll need a funny two pinned spanner or if your lucky tap it round with a punch. Once that's out you can then drive out the old pin from the top. With that out you then need to remove in inner bushes. When you buy a kingpin set it comes with new ones. These have to be pressed in then reamed out to size using a reamer or honing tool. Then press the new pin in and replace everything else in reverse order. :)

it's a fiddley and time consuming job but strangely satisfying once done. How much play is there? Have you tried pumping fresh grease in? Sometimes that's enough to take a little play out if it's only a small amount.

Added some grease but it didn't help unfortunately... looks like they've been ran dry for a while.

Hopefully I can source the kingpins for a fair price... although looks like I'll need a reamer though if theres no inventive way of doing things...

I'm too young to know anything about Kingpins but i'm slowly learning the ways of old :).

Lol yes their definatly "old school" even back when they were new  ;D

The reamer is needed because the inner bushes that the kingpin turns in needs to be clean an perfectly true to the kingpin or it will just stick an jam. As you press the bushes in there will always be a tiny bit of distortion so the reamer is used to open them out so they ate perfectly true to the kingpin. Even after they have been reamed there still tight for bit untill they settle in so it's an important process. Reamers aren't that expensive you can buy a set or buy them individually

If you have any idea on the side for the reamer or can link me to something suitable for the job it would be appreciated... I may need one for a mini thats being restored also when replacing some bushes in the future!

Reamer??? what is one of those? :). Replaced the kingpins and the 3 bushes in the stub axel on both sides. Anyone doing this you may find the center of the old top/leaf spring bush is useful for driving out the old phosphor bronze bush!
