Many of the finer points of engine tuning are a bit beyond my scope so when it come to things like specialist cylinder head work and camshafts I have to go to the experts. After hearing that a well known Fiat engine tuner was suppling hot camshafts which are good used ones that have been reprofiled then selling them with a price tag well over £200 this lit a little lamp in my brain (normaly a dark area :) ) . I set out to investigate how this might be done including comparing a hot cam with a good standard one and I could see how the cam could be modified as long as the original lobes are not too worn. I say that because at least 1 in 4 used cams I have removed from engines have a severely worn lobe and are scrap. So after quite a few months, investigating , talking to guys from the club and camshaft specialists a small batch have gone in for reprofiling. with the co-operation of another club member we have put the batch together and have opted for the 35/75-75/35 spec with a higher lift than standard as listed on one of the major European parts suppliers as a Sport Camshaft. After machining the camshafts will be hardened to prevent future wear. These camshafts will be most suitable for a tuned engine as part of a "package" which may include carb , cylinder head & exhaust and would generally be referred to as "fast road" so useable around town and not too crazy like full race. There will be 3 or 4 that are not yet spoken for so it will be first come first served and although we have not got the final bill I hope we can get a price on the right side of £100. ;D

Hi Ralph , I have sent a message and earmarked one for you :) There will be more information to follow as we are looking at some sort of exchange service and considering other specs for 500 & 126 owners who might want to "pep" up a relatively standard engine without other major modifications ;D

Yes these are cams for the air-cooled however I did discuss the possibility of the Bis cam and it is all do-able but relies on having a number of suitable camshafts to reprofile to get a reasonable price. You can get a single camshaft reworked at any time but it is going to cost you for a one off. There are a couple of other Bis owners that are interested so it is a case Fiat 126 "Club" together to get a result. I did also enquire about working in a Bis cam with the air-coolers and was told that it was possible for a small extra charge as the machinery would require resetting. So anyone who is serious about this get onboard as it will be a case of who dares wins. This project could start and end here as most of the first batch are now spoken for , air-coolers that are thinking tuning know it could be a good deal but as far as I am aware there are no suppliers of hot cams for the Bis :D

Hi Fly, Rusty Uncle has organized this, he needs to send the cams in batches of 10 to get the best price this includes re-profiling and tuftriding which is a hardening process, I'll be popping down to Rusty's next month, If you want, I can take your spare camshaft down with me?

Hey Fly, If your not doing anything on the 14th June why not join us at the Hot Rod and Classic Meet, Its only 20 Mins from Sheffield and you can bring the Cam to be Re-profiled :)

Have a good look at your camshaft to make sure none of the four lobes are very worn, a little wear is no problem. Also a good idea to mark your camshaft in some way otherwise it might get mixed up with some of the dodgy ones that Pete will come up with ;D

Hmmm interesting! I'd certainly be interested in a bis cam... more info!? May be able to source cams in Poland perhaps for re profiling.

Hi Poxxxy , If I may be so formal ;)
This project relies on a supply of or owners coming forward with a suitable camshaft. It only got off the ground with the help of "Mr Big" , the secret partner who dipped into his 126 treasure so between us we could get enough cams together for a production run at a good price. So still waiting for the cams and the final bill. Hopes are high and I will report the progress here but if anybody is up for it then start planning ahead as apart from the first batch it will be done to order when another batch can be put together. I think that we have 7 promised so far for the next run , need 10 :)

As discussed on the dog, I'll see if I have a spare cam in this pile of cra.... selection of quality used parts I got with my car.
If the only camshaft I have is the one in the primrose engine, I'll have to bring it round for a strip down :-).

Thought I had better check on the progress with these today and found that the work had not started which was disappointing but had a polite word and they rang me back an hour later to say the work had started ;D

hmmm i'll try and lay my hands on a camshaft from poland perhaps... but I definitely want a more aggressive cam :).

Are all this bis cams spoken for? I'm in the market for one now my engine is stripped down... although I really need to find a solution to my piston/block issue... someone must know of oversized pistons for the bis somewhere :).

Sorry I missed your last post poxxxy. As yet no bis crankshafts have been reprofiled, only ones for the air cooled 500 & 126 engines. Most of these are now shipped out to the guys that wanted one but there is still one going spare from the first batch. Potentially there are 5 or 6 camshafts ready for the next batch as we need to get 10 to make it economically viable so if any of you water boilers want in then I need the cams :)

It seems that the early enthusiasm for repeating this project with the inclusion of Bis cams has faded. It was always a case of "who dares wins" so there are a number of happy guys out there. The idea is not dead & buried but with current commitments and travel plans I would probably not be able to co-ordinate any more until the new year subject to enough interest :)

I am able to get sport camshaft to BIS. The Characteristics of the camshaft is typically to drive in the city.
Better acceleration and greater power

I am told that there is still interest in this idea but we are about 3 short of the 10 camshafts needed to make it economically viable. So if interested let it be known :)

So how much are the BIS ones? If funds support I will be in on this! Just starting to rebuild mine now I've seen some online for the motivation :)

Hi Dom if the price has stayed the same then you would be looking at about £75 if you can supply a suitable camshaft for reprofiling.
