Does anyone know how to set how far the rod hangs out, one method is using a pressure gauge which I don't have, so am looking at the rod hangout. Looks like my one has standard thickness gaskets and looks a fairly new pump. I have measured the rod at 188mm which is 0.9mm short of a new one by the looks of it (do I need a new rod, the thick spacer looks fine, just a little sideways wear on hole.
Can you damage the pump if there is too much rod protruding?
I found one post which sais..
"the rod must come over the seal surface exactly 1,5mm (other source says 1...1,5mm and 2,4mm stroke), before it's pushed by the eccentric on the camshaft. If it's more or less, you can adjust it by fitting 0,3-0,7-1,2mm seal between the heat isolator and the block."
Is it a case of turning the engine over manually with the alternator pulley to get the off cam position to measure the 1.5mm or whatever is should be.
Many Thanks.

The rod should protude 1 to 1.5 mms outside the outer gasket at the low point of the cam. I think the travel is 2.5 mms. Also the Haynes manual for the air cooled engines gives a torque rating of 20 ft.lbs which is crazy. Do not do it as you end up bending the flange on the fuel pump. Just tighten by feel to get a seal and nylock nuts are a good idea :)

Just had a measure up, I've got 1.7mm at low point and 4mm high point outside outer gasket. So travel of 2.3mm. So I guess this is about right.
The rod measures 188mm and it looks like a new one starts out at 188.9mm

Fuel pumps are pretty forgiving, so long as the rod goes in and out and you have the spacer in there itll work fine:)

I'll have to check this... I was wondering why there were so many gaskets supplied!
