Title: Fanny won't start
Post by: essex southend on January 22, 2014, 12:46:56 PM
Tried to start Fanny today and she just makes a whirling sound,  just had a look round the engine and have noticed the cap and arm missing but was curious to know what this set up is?  thanks

As you`ve got the twin coil it should still start as it is if the timing is set correct.
What do you mean about the whirling sound? Does the engine turn over OK on the starter?

There should still be 1 wire from the middle of the cap no?

Thanks for the reply,  the engine doesn't turn at all,  just a whirling sound, no clicking.  Thanks

I was mstaken, been outside to have a look at my brothers car which is on the double coil system. It had the cap still in place but a wire leading from the distributor itself to the coils. there is not wire from the cap itself, and then from the the coil then 2 plugs are wired up as usual. I will try and upload the pictures from it.

Thanks Chris,  it will be good if I can see what it looks like.  I think mine must be the starter motor playing up.

Yes, yours sounds like a starter solenoid.
There should be a plastic cap like this on the distributor.

Maybe the solenoid is not pushing the bendix out to mesh in with the flywheel ring gear, so try tapping it with a stout object, ie piece of wood/small hammer when someone it turning the key.....Plan your escape route 1st.  If that does`nt work, the starter motor needs removing and you may have a build up of crud on the shaft of the starter, which stops the little geared cog, (bendix) from sliding freely.
Dip in parrafin/diesel, tooth brush, clean up and put a little bit of light oil on shaft, Mike.

Hi Mike,  thanks for the advice,  it was the tag on the solenoid which was broken and looks like a stone might have damaged it.  I removed the whole unit and cleaned everything and it seems okay now.  Ta for the advice.  Ray
